NTR: If your DH is 6'4" or taller, please recommend your car....

We only have 1 LO but plan to have more in the future.  We are looking for a sedan/suv that has enough room for a tall driver with a RF carseat in the back.  I currently have a Yukon that I LOVE but recently started a job that requires ~100 mile round trip commute each day so I'm looking for something with better mpg.  We haven't actually tried putting her carseat in others cars yet but would like some recommendations.  My car is the family car so we will use it on weekends, trips etc.  TIA!

  • I'm actually open to a minivan but DH just isn't on board yet.  His first car was his mom's hand me down minivan and I think it has scarred him for life. LOL!!!

This.  We have a 2007 Chrysler T&C and love it.  It has the most head room, and enough space behind the seat for the car seat.

  • Surprisingly, there are plenty of sedans that offer tall drivers/passengers enough room even with a RF seat in the back. Older babies and toddlers can (and should) have their car seats less reclined than newborns, which also gives more room for front passengers.

My suggestions for vehicles with lots of room both front and back are the Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima or Maxima, Ford Flex (sort of a wagon crossover), Lincoln Town Car, etc. Any large sedan or even some considered mid-sized sedans will work. Bring a car seat and install it when you test drive cars :)

DH is 6'5 and our family car is the Hyundai Veracruz. He fits fine. The carseat we have is the Graco MyRide which is a realy tall carseat. It has three rows of seats but we keep the third row down.

  • My DH is 6'5 and he fits best in his truck (Silverado) but my Pilot (06) fits him well. We keep the RF seat behind the passenger due to it pushing the seat forward. When LO#2 arrives we'll put the infant seat in the middle so it doesn't push the drivers seat forward. I'm 5'10 and drive with my seat all the way back but not nearly as reclined as DH does when he drives. He prefers sitting in the passenger seat, he says it feels more spacious over there. I'm sure the convertible seat FF would be a perfect fit behind the drivers seat if you don't mind being kicked.

  • Volvo S60.  We both love it.
  • My DH is 6'5" and we have a Scion and he fits great in it, he is thin so I don't know if that plays into it at all. There is plenty of room in the back seat also. We don't RF anymore but his car seat fit just fine when we did.

  • Mazda cx-9. DH us 6'2" and it works for us.
  • Thank you all for your help! This gives us a great starting point!
  • DH is 6'4 so here's my input:

We had a honda element that DH loved. SO much room in the back and TONS of head room. DH could even sit in the back with absolutely no issues. It was his car, but when the lease came up we traded it in for a honda CRV because it would be my car and I wasn't a huge fan of the reverse style rear doors with a rear facing carseat (we were planning on having #2 soon, see siggy lol). The CRV is perfect for what I need it for (the storage shelf in the trunk makes it easy to have the stroller under it, and all the groceries on top), and it still works just fine for DH, though there isn't as much room in the back.

With that kind of a commute though, take a look at the VW Tiguan. DH had one as a loaner and LOVED it, and he said it was great on car (he drives a crap-load for work). He likes the Touareg too.

  • My DH is 6'5" and has always bought 2 door cars.  He says there is more room and the door frame isn't in his vision's way when he puts the seat all of the way back.  I can't help you with what we drive now because the gas mileage is terrible (Jeep Wrangler and Honda Odyssey).

DH is 6'3 & a big guy. He's just big. lol We have a Nissan Pathfinder & a Hyundai Elantra. He fits in both just fine. We also looked at the Honda Pilot & he fit fine in that. Honda Accord, Hyundai Santa Fe where both contenders as well.

I'm also tall at 5'10" & fit our cars nicely.

  • we have a ford escape but IF we have another kid, we're going to have to upgrade to something bigger. we can't fit a carseat behind the driver's seat.
