How often do you experience "poop-splosions"?

sorry for the gross question, but I'm beginning to think we need to find a new kind of diaper or something....

For the past few weeks DS has pooped out of his diaper and onto his clothes and even car seat and bouncer at least once a week.  Most times it's out the sides but sometimes up the back.  Is this normal or do we need to think about switching diaper brands or sizes, or something else?

DS is ebf, weighs about 12 lbs, and wears size 1 Pampers right now (that go up to 15 lbs).

TIA!

Try going a size up in diapers. We always go up to the next size when DS hits the bottom of the weight range for that size, and I think it helps reduce the chances of leaks. If that doesn't work, I'd try another brand.

  • Yeah, try a size 2.

  • I really have never found the weight ranges on diapers to be very accurate for DS. I'd buy a small box of size 2s and see if that helps. I'd say once a week was probably fairly normal for us, but you can always see if the size 2s help at all, and if not just save them for when he needs them!

  • or COSTCO size 1-2.

but I have to say both of my kids are poopers so this did happen pretty often in our house. My DS is 11mo old and in the last week he had 2 blowouts and both of them ended up on me (I was wearing work shirts, white of course).

At least you know he's eating well :)

  • We had a ton of blowouts/leaks when LO was EBF. We probably had one every other day.  I tried different brands and sizes of diapers, but nothing helped. I think it was just the nature of EBF poop. When he started eating solids, we had far, far fewer poopsplosions. I'd recommend trying a larger size diaper (you'll need them eventually anyway, so they won't go to waste), but if that doesn't help, just hang in there and know that it won't last forever.

  • we only had a handful of these and it was almost always a sign that it was time to go up a diaper size. definitely try the next size up.

that said, some babies are more explosive than others :-( so don't think that you are doing something wrong if the next size up doesn't help.

  • We just switched to size 2 diapers when my LO hit 12 lbs and a few oz. We didn't have poop blowouts but had tons of leaks for about a week. We hit the peak of poopsplosions at about 8 weeks or so and they got better after that. Now he only poops once a day and while it's pretty big, it seems to stay contained better. I will never forget, though, the time he pooped on the wall that is three feet away from his changing table.

  • LO seemed to have almost daily blow outs for a while.  They got better once she started solids.  We did change brands several times, and bought a size bigger when she was little.

  • Not too often, but H only poops about once a week now. (Though when she does, look out!)  Before this slow down, we had a few blowouts but we were still in NB size diapers and probably needed a bigger size. When we went up to size 1s, we didn't have them anymore unless she was in an awkward position and had a lot lot lot of poop.

  • thanks gals -  I'll try one size up but if that doesn't work at least I know I'm not alone!
