Tummy time - how long/often?

My LO is 9 weeks old and HATES tummy time. He starts screaming right away. I have tried the boppy and can get about a minute out of him. Should I just put him down several times a day? How long should he have tummy time at this age? He is spending too much time on his back and getting a flat head!

Re: Tummy time - how long/often?

  • Someone told me every day and start with 5 minutes, but Rory HATES tummy time too.  So I go for about 30 seconds at a time and as soon as she starts to fuss a little, I roll her back over, play with her and then try again.  Also, have you tried letting him nap on his tummy?  I discovered that Rory will stay asleep longer on her tummy than if I put her down on her back or in a swing.  She also gets a little tummy time this way because she lifts her neck when she starts waking up without getting angry.

  • DS is 8 weeks old and we just do a few minutes a day b/c he's not a huge fan of tummy time either.  DH found a trick that works for us though.  we combine naked time with tummy time after his bath in the evenings, and he seems to tolerate it a bit better.  hope that helps.
  • We get a lot of our tummy time in while she's lying on my chest.  She likes that a lot more than lying on her playmat and she still gets all of the benefits of tummy time.  You can try that and see if it works for your LO.

  • I get about 5 minutes before he loses it.

  • My DD is a super happy baby in the morning so I will get up, change her diaper and then do some tummy time. After a while she gets mad and starts crying, sometimes she falls asleep though, lol. I think they are supposed to get mad in order to roll over.

  • We do a lot of tummy time while he's laying on my chest.  Also just holding them in positions where they can't rest their head on you gives them opportunity to work on head control.

We will give my LO about 5 minutes, and she will starting crying, but we just keep telling her how good it is for her and try to distract like crazy.  And with all that anger and kicking and flailing, she can scoot across the play mat and roll onto her back.   Not entirely intentional, but a sign that she's getting some good out of all that frustration!
