Generic bubbles not as good as brand name?

This is sort of random and a post on a not-so-important topic but I was wondering if I'm the only one who has had this experience. I buy a lot of generic products and I typically find the quality of generics to be just as good or at least not noticeably bad for most items.

DD has a set of bubbles and I really like the wand and shape of the bottle. Since the bubble liquid was getting low, I decided to buy a set of those cheapy 6 packs of generic bubbles to refill the bottle with. However, I have found that the bubble liquid is horrible. I can barely blow a bubble from it and I must say that I'm a decent bubble blower.

So, I guess I'm going to have to go buy one of the name-brand jugs of bubbles to refill the bubbles with. Anyone else have this experience?

[On a side note, the reason that this is so important is because DD has recently refused to take baths on her own and the only way I can get her in is to get in the bath myself and to start blowing bubbles. Therefore, the quality of the bubbles has become more important over the past few weeks!]

  • I just bought a big bottle at the dollar store and they are fine.  Have you tried adding some dishsoap to what you have to see if that won't bubble them up a little, for lack of a better term?

There is also this that a bookmarked a while back thinking I could refill my large jar as well.  Haven't tried it yet so if you do, share your experience.  Maybe you should add the karo to the existing bubbles?

    Best Homemade Bubble Solution

    1 cup water
2 tablespoons light karo syrup or 2 tablespoons glycerin
    4 tablespoons dishwashing liquid

    Mix together and have fun!

  • Yes, I've had that same problem! The 99 cent bottle from CVS wouldn't blow any bubbles. You would think it wouldn't be that hard/expensive to make good bubbles. J went through a phase where he was afraid of the bath, too. Have you tried bubble bath? He likes to scoop up the bubbles and blow them out of his hand (before we discovered that we were doing the same crazy routine as you).

  • Let me try this again as I do not see the "recipe" on my first response.

    1 cup water

2 Tbsp light Karo Syrup or 2 Tbsp glycerin

    4 Tbsp dishwashing soap

    mix together.

  • T&C - I remember you saying something about your son not liking baths and then a few weeks later it happened to us. Last night though, I was able to get her to go into the bath on her own (thank goodness!). Yes, we do bubble bath as well. I bring those stacking cups into the bath and we put the bubbles in that which I think she enjoys. Hopefully she will continue going in on her own now.

Hollace - Thanks for the recipe. I'll probably save that for later. For now, I'm going to splurge and buy some brand-name bubbles.

On a side note, yesterday we went to the IL's and they had a cheap bottle of bubbles which I had bought to keep at their house. DH got them out to start blowing bubbles and I told him that that particular bottle wouldn't work and that the bubbles were no good. He responded with, "No, I'm an expert bubble blower". After a few minutes of trying with limited success, he said, "these aren't working". LOL. So, we got out the bottle of brand name bubbbles and they were fine.

  • I don't know about bubble quality - but a word of warning about the bubbles in the $1 bin at the entrances at Target.  I bought two bottles for a party we were having this weekend; set them out and thought nothing of it.  Later, a mom approached me and asked for wands.  Apparently, the bottles only contain bubbles -- no wands.  Not even the little ones attached to the caps.

  • I definitely see a bubble difference with different brands.  IMO the best bubble blower and solution is found at Gymboree.  Even when it is windy you can blow a ton of bubbles with this thing.  I have had parents at parks ask me where I got it.   The solution is definitely much thicker than other bubble solutions.

We also have a bubble machine where I use some big bottle of bubbles we got from Target (not generic brand though) and it works well in there.

  • Thanks ladies for the Gymboree bubble rec. I'll check those out.

  • I've found that the Magic Bubbles really are the best. I don't know why.  You'd think that it would be pretty easy to get the right mixture of water and soap...

ETA:  Gymboree bubbles are good, but they leave a weird film on you afterward.  I don't know that they're made from soap.  It even says on the bottle that you need to be sure that you wash surfaces after use, so I'd be wary of using them in the bathroom.
