breastflow bottles (plus a bonus freak out)

I registered for the first years' breastflow bottles today - the disposables with the drop in liners. Any 2nd timers have any experience with this style or brand?

Bonus material: Pregnancy hormones are getting the best of me tonight and DH just had to talk me down from a total freak out in which I questioned my ability to parent based on my uncertainty as to whether I had picked "the best possible bottle/nipple" for a breastfed baby. Oh boy! (Thankfully he helped me gain some perspective in that we can always buy different bottles if these don't work!) LOL at myself right now... (but kind of tearing up still too - again, oh boy, hormones!!!)

  • I'm a first timer, so I don't have feedback on the bottles. I do sympathize with your pregnancy hormones. Mine have been on edge for the last two days. I almost started crying tonight because I missed my ex, who has left me to go through this pregnancy alone. And I have been told they only get worse. Yikes! We'll get through it though!

I'm going to check my registry to make sure I have the breastflow bottles on my registry- I just don't remember.

I can definitely relate to the freak out though.  A few weeks ago, DH and I decided to look at baby stuff at Target and I got so overwhelmed.  No tears at Target fortunately, but I was close.  It wasn't even a big section either, I had a choice of like 5 carseats and couldn't handle it.  Fortunately, you all have been super helpful to this lurker and I feel much better about our registry.

  • I had these for DS. They were the only bottle he almost would take. He would use it if I was not in the same zip code, the sucking necessary is the same as the breast. My only complaint is the draining part, I always feel like milk was wasted, as it didn't fully drain back down into the bottle (the nipple is 2 parts, and milk collects between the 2 pieces) and ask any woman who has ever pumped in her life, you do not want to waste pumped milk.

  • I hated the breastflow bottles. We tried them because DD wouldn't latch and I was trying to pump and feed, and continued using them for a few weeks after we started formula feeding. They were awful - they leaked no matter how well you put them together, and as PP said, the milk collects between the two nipples and you have to stop every minute or two to drain the milk back into the bottle. We wasted so much formula with those bottles because we would have to make up an oz more than we needed so DD could get enough and feel full. I finally tossed them all and switched to the wide Playtex VentAire bottles and they were so much better.

  • We tried them, but DS wouldn't take them.

He was *very* picky about bottles, though, and it took weeks of trying out different bottles before we found one that he'd take (MAM). It was partially my fault, though -- I waited too long to introduce the bottle, and we missed the "magic window" around 6 weeks.  He was nearly 3 months old before we tried the bottle, and that was WAY too late. Lesson learned, and we'll be introducing the bottle much earlier this time.

There's no way to know which bottle will work best before your LO arrives. Some babies will drink from anything, others are super picky. Same goes with pacifiers, swaddling, swings, bouncers, virtually EVERYTHING -- every baby is different, and what works well for one might not work so well for another. Just remember that no amount of research or reading of user reviews can prepare you for what your child will like...you just have to go with the flow and figure it out along the way! And you WILL figure it out, I promise. :)

  • DS loved them!  They were the only ones he took.  They have worked great for others I have counseled too!  Great for switching between breast and bottle (after BF is established of course). :)

  • I also registered for those bottle(s)- though I will probably start with just one or two in case baby doesnt like them.  I plan to introduce the bottle early; I plan to BF and pump but I want DH to be able to feed the baby, and I dont want my mom (who will keep baby) to struggle when I first go back to work.

OH- and I have totally been having meltdowns lately Crying It's really hard on me because I am not used to behaving that way.  I have embarassed DH in a store, gone to bed crying a few times and gone to work with puff eyes!  Big No on pregnancy hormones!!

  • They are the ONLY bottle my three breastfed babies would take. We tried lots of different ones and these were the only ones they'd take.  Even then, they still preferred mommy, but that was ok with me.  :)  These bottles worked when I HAD to be away though.
