Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

The doctor says to see how it goes...

Any thoughts on what could be going on with my LO?

She has had a fever as high as 103 last night with no other symptoms.  She is eating, drinking, playing all like normal, but just very hot.  She is having plenty of diapers too.  I called the on-call doctor and he said just to monitor her and if it gets high again (up to 104) then to bring her to the ER.  I just don't know what it could be.  She is a little over 17 months old.  TIA

  • Both my DDs had that about a month ago.  DD1 actually ended up having a febrile seizure, so make sure you alternate Motrin and Tylenol.  They had no other symptoms besides the fever.  DD2's fever got as high as 105.1.  When DD2 had the seizure he fever went from 100 to 103 in about 20 minutes which is what caused the fever.

  • It seems to be going around.  Aiden had a fever up to 103ish for four days a week and a half ago.  No other symptoms and a trip to the pedi left us with nothing but "It'll probably pass in a couple days." :)

  • a similar thing happened to DD.  It was over after 3-4 days and we kept it down with tylenol and motrin.  If it's still there after several days or other symptoms come up I'd take her in.

  • E was like this a month ago. She would be lethargic and then up and playing. I would say it sounds like a virus.
  • DD's went as high as 105 a few weeks ago. Ended up being Roseola virus. Keep her with minimal clothing at night as fevers tend to spike more at night.

  • That has happened in our house two separate times. Both times it hovered around 103, lasted about 24 hours and broke overnight with no obvious cause either time. She wasn't seen either time. I hate fevers! Hopefully it's nothing, GL.

  • DD had this happen to her a couple of months ago. She had a high fever for about 2 days and then broke out in a TERRIBLE rash all over her body. She was miserable..the pedi said it looked like something like fifth disease. So just keep an eye out for a rash..nothing you can do about it but benadryl and motrin or tylenol.

E just broke with the same thing on Friday afternoon. She's fussy and clingy, but otherwise acting fine. Her temperature keeps roller coastering, so we're going to see how it goes today and, if she's still got a fever tomorrow, we'll make a ped appointment.

  • There is a virus going around that causes very high temps. Could be that. I would just keep an eye on her and make sure she continues to have wet diapers.

  • DD had that last year.  It wound up being a UTI (they let the 104 + temps go on for 4 days before DD actually ACTED sick, despite my telling them repeatedly that DD never acts sick unless it's bad).  She had to be hospitalized.

High fevers are pretty normal in kids, though.  If she isn't acting sick, I'd follow what your doc says and keep an eye on the fever.  If it gets back up high or doesn't come down with Ibuprofin/Acetamenophen, then go to the ER.

  • It sounds like roseola to me.
