Help... Formula ?'s- switching cold turkey and sensitive formulas

DS has been inconsolable today. I'm at my wit's end and in tears. He just won't stop crying. He acts like all he wants to do is eat 24/7. I fed him more than his usual, but he just spit it right back up, but acts like he still wants more. I've tried Mylicon and gripe water. He seems to have gotten progressively gassy over the past few days. He is passing gas like crazy and will go rigid and scrunch his face. I've been BF'ing and feeding similac advanced (more formula than BM). I have a can of similac sensitive and want to try it. I would normally gradually change, but I'm afraid his current formula is what is doing it. Is there potential for making it worse switching to a sensitive formula? Is that something I'm supposed to talk to the pedi about first?

  • We switched cold turkey, because they're both milk based formulas, and we noticed a huge difference in gas in a few hours.  I am not sure if that would be advised, but I know that if you were switching from milk to soy, you'd want to ease them onto it.

  • My LO was on similac advanced and then sensitive.  I found that sensitive was better but still kind of bubbly.  I then switched to Gerber Good Start Sensitive and it was great.  I would totally recommend it

I just switched cold turkey and LO never seemed to have a problem with it.    You could do it cold turkey, or mix them.   Either way is fine.

  • Ya I totally switched cold turkey one night when I'd had enough. I asked the pedi after the fact and he said it was fine.

That's exactly what happened with us.  We used the Advance and switched to the sensitive.  It did help a lot.  We switched cold turkey.  We didn't have any problems and it seems like the next day was so much better.  He still will have some episodes like that, but I am starting to think he might have some days where he has some silent reflux.  My LO wasn't having bowel movements as often either on the advance (3-4 days). Now he is going every other day, if not every day.
  • Thanks! We went ahead and gave him the sensitive last night with more gas drops. He finally crashed around 1 and slept until 9 this morning. I shouldn't have let him go that long, but I was about to lose my mind. He seems much more comfortable today. We also switched to the playtex bottles and drop-ins last night instead of feeding directly out of the little ready-to-feed bottles like they had us doing in the hospital. Fingers crossed for today...

  • I haven't read other responses.  Here's my 2 cents.  I'd go to the dr and get him checked for reflux.

I'd switch cold turkey. My first DS was lactose intolerant and the dr told me to switch right away. If you find the right formula you'll instantly see a difference.

  • We switched from Enfamil newborn to Gentlease to Nutramigen (lactose free), each time cold turkey. I called and mentioned it to the nurse at the pediatrician's office but it's fine to just do it and then tell the pedi at your next visit.
