Marathon BF'ing

I just manually pried my LO off my breast after nearly 2.5 hours of feeding. There were breaks in there, but not many.  He's now being changed by his father and I don't know what I'll do if he's still showing signs of wanting to nurse. I realize that some babies just nurse for comfort and that might be what he is doing but I can't sleep if he's fussing so I might as well offer up a breast.

 Anyone else experiencing this?

Re: Marathon BF'ing

  • This is what Liam is like sometimes. When we left the hospital, he weighed 4 lbs, 13 oz, and a week later at his 2 week appointment he was 5 lbs, 11 oz, and the doctor couldn't believe it. We have a betting pool going of what he'll weigh at Tuesday's appointment--his one month check-up. I totally think he'll be over 7 lbs.

Remember Clifford, the big red dog, how he was the runt and Emily Elizabeth extra-loved him, and he grew to be bigger than the house? I'm pretty sure that's what's going on here.

I just make sure to put on nipple cream every chance I get, and I drink TONS of liquids.

  • Yes, today has been nonstop. Normally I'm ok with comfort sucking, but today I had to push the paci. I'm dealing with oversupply issues so I can't have him comfort sucking right now. I figured if he put up a fight with the paci, he needed to eat. Since he didn't I figured he just needed to suck a bit more.

  • Yep, Aubrey has days like this. I, too, just offer her the boob to keep her happy. I also supplement formula on days like this just to make sure her belly is full and my nipples don't fall off.

  • DS did this the other day. He wasn't happy with anyone or anything  unless he was near my boob. He went beyond eating and just wanted to hang out there. If I tried to move him he would full on howl. When I'd return him to his place of comfort he would basically motorboat me - odd child. It was pretty funny and only lasted for the day but it felt like it was on and off all. day. long.

On the plus side I was able to catch up on a significant amount of DVRed shows.

  • D has done this for 2 days now.  My boobs are seriously almost down to my PP size they're so empty!!

  • Glad to know my son isn't the only greedy feeder :)

I'm ok with it, especially if I can curl up on the couch while he does it. But of course, this was right as I was hoping to get to bed last night!

  • Mine does it too.  It has really helped increase my supply.  I've gone from pumping about 1-2 ounces total to about 5 ounces.  I attribute it to the marathon nursing sessions.   I know she's mostly comfort sucking...she will NOT take a paci.

  • It's been a LOOOOONG day over here... mostly comfort sucking, crying, more comfort sucking and won't take the pacifier. My nipples are killing me!! I think she's prepping for the 6 week growth spurt and I'm hoping her constant sucking is helping my supply Wink

I saved this from kellymom.com for those days that I feel very overwhelmed breastfeeding ALL day long...

Remember that nursing is not just about food - it's also warmth, closeness, reassurance, comfort, healing, love... Nursing has been shown to reduce stress and pain in baby, too. If you're feeling that baby shouldn't be hungry again so soon - remember that it's sometimes Mom that baby needs just as much as the milk.
