We have an Evenflo Triumph 65 RFing behind the driver in a VW Jetta (which still allows my 6' DH to drive comfortably). It was the smallest depth we could find that still got great ratings.

I have a Safety 1st Complete Air 65 in a Ford Escape. I did need to move the seat forward a little bit (maybe 2 inches?) to get the car seat in and not have it touch the front seat. At 5'7" I can still drive safely but my long legs get kind of cramped on long drives so I moved it behind the passenger instead of the driver.
There are probably smaller depth seats out there compared to this one...
I have a truck that's a 1.5 cab, so there's a decent sized bench seat in the back, but it's a bench seat all the same. We had no issues with the Snugride 32 oddly enough. Now I'm thinking the guy wasn't explaining things right, though, do you NEED to recline the seat rear facing for any reason? He put it in and reclined it and was like "Nope, doesn't fit!" because it hit the front seat. We're going somewhere else this week because he really wasn't that helpful. Hopefully it won't be as busy and we won't get someone so rushed.
You can look up the depths somewhere online (maybe consumer reports? I forget)...but I took a tape measure into the store with me, and they were all within 1/2" of each other except I think the Graco Myride which was bigger. I ended up with the Britax Boulevard, in a Nissan Sentra. It isn't super narrow, but it isn't any worse than the infant seat.

It has to be reclined rear facing, but you can push on the seat and install it more upright even though it's mechanically reclined. It doesn't have to be at 45 degrees. I think you should be able to fit just about anything if you got an infant seat in there.

I have the Marathon still RFing in my tiny toyota RAV4 (2005 smaller version before they redesigned it bigger).. and we moved the passenger seat up just a tiny bit so we could tether it and it is fine if my DH drives and I sit there.. He's 6'3" so he doesn't fit comfortably in passenger seat.. but he doesn't use the car daily, like I do. When I have my new little guy this summer.. we'll put him behind the driver seat (with our infant seat, there was no problem with seat).... well, until we can affford to get another.. bigger car... plus once my DD is 2 I can FF her, and it should fit better. I think you should go to someone else to help you with the seat.

carseatdata.org was really helpful when we were looking for a car seat. Shows the best bets for your vehicle. We have a Sunshine Radian and I love it. It's narrow and doesn't take up the entire back seat.

I tried this site, but it doesn't break down further than make and model, so I can look up the Tacoma, but have no idea if it's a double or 1.5 cab they're talking about. I'm wondering if the difference is the height of the seat with the incline because the headrests on the convertibles are a lot taller than the bucket seats and my passenger seat is already up pretty much as far as it will go. Hopefully we'll have better luck our next trip out. Worst case scenario we'll get something like the Maxi Cosi Priori (it fit okay, but without much legroom RF) for my truck and something bigger for DH's car that I can use FF when the time comes.

we have a roundabout and marathon and they both fit in H's Jetta wagon.
But thats all I have experience with.
