Should DH try Anastrozole/Arimidex?

Just curious if any of you all have experience with using this breast cancer drug to increase testosterone levels in men.  DH has low T and would like to try something to help his symptoms.  We know we can't just go to his PCP and get the injections since we are ttc and it could do more harm than good.  His sperm analysis is normal, not stellar but normal (the lowest being morphology) but we really need to find a way to increase his testosterone.  He's depressed more often, gaining weight, has performance issues, can't ever get good quality sleep, etc.  I am just fishing for someone who might have any advice or knowledge about this drug.  Thx ladies.

Re: Should DH try Anastrozole/Arimidex?

  • Has he seen a uro?

You can try clomid, Anastrozole, or Arimidex to see if it helps. Unfortanatly, none of the oral drugs helped my DH at all, but his t is SUPER low (lower than a womans level!) and he had other issues as well. So his uro put him on hcg injects 3 x per week and that helped almost immedatly. It was amazing! We were able to go from 300,000 total motal sperm and IVF w/ICSI only to counts in the 20-40 mil. range (still ow motility & morph) and do IUI's! Our 3rd one worked.

    Best of luck to you!!

  • It helped my DH...Arimidex and HCG inj three times a week. It made him feel a lot better.   Count was 0 last July and went up to 12 million by Nov, not sure what his count was during our IVF in Feb.  Definitely try to find a urologist that specializes in male infertility.

Just a tip on the Arimidex if you insurance won't cover it-our would not.  We got the generic for a lot cheaper at Costco so shop around!  I think it is around $25 for a 30 day supply.  Wal-Mart and CVS wanted around $400 for the generic!

  • Wow, HCG injections, who knew!  We are just wanting something to raise his levels enough to alleviate the symptoms he's having.  Since it seems to be my endo that is causing the fertility problems we don't really have to do anything to increase his counts (they are okay).  I have talked to him about seeing a urologist but he seems to think he can just tell his pcp that we are ttc and can run some different ideas by him and see if he's willing to let him try any.  I'm not worried his low t is affecting our chances of pregnancy, I just want him to feel better.  I am going to look up more info about those hcg injections though, thanks so much for responding!

  • Congrats on your pregnancy Eriksgal!  You're gonna be one busy Momma!  :)  That is a HUGE increase btw, wow!  And I already know our insurance won't cover it so we will shop around.  We don't have any Costco's here but we do have Sam's Club and I think that is a similar type of place.  Thx for the tip!

  • My Dh has been taking arimidex since february.  His count was 11.3 mil/ml in December, 45 mil/ml in Feb and 21 mil/ml in April.  We are very happy with the results.  It is a low risk drug and we got the Rx from his urologist.  It's just a pill though, not an injection.

  • And yes, we definitely notice the positive side effects of higher T levels... better sex drive, better mood, etc.
