Poly-vi-sol w Iron ?

LO was born at 35 weeks (is now almost 7 weeks old) and is on poly-vi-sol w iron to give her the iron she didn't get to store up from gestating longer.  Currently, I give it to her every night in 15 ml of  pumped BM in a bottlem(I pumped while she was in the NICU for 5 weeks, so I have tons of frozen milk - I defrost an ice cube size a day for this purpose).  I'm wondering if any of you have LOs who take the poly-vi-sol with iron directly from the dropper, instead of mixed with BM? She's a spitter, and I'm worried the taste will make her spit it up, but it would be easier to give it directly...

Re: Poly-vi-sol w Iron ?

  • I've tried giving it to DS straight, it's messy and very concentrated so it leaves a stain (that washes out if washed right away). We would make 20 mL of milk and put it in there. I now put it with 150 mL in the morning and he sucks it down, I think he likes the taste. Go ahead and try putting it in with the dropper and see how you like it

I give it to DS straight and started at about 9 months.  It took him about 3 -5 days to get use to it. He still takes it now - straight from the dropper and seems to like it even.  As pp said it stains so when you try straight from the dropper the 1st few times either have LO in diaper only and/or cover you with a cloth or towel.

  • DS didn't like it but we managed to give it to him directly.  When you start cereal at 6 months, or later since your LO was early, you can switch to the Poly-Vi-Sol without iron, which doesn't taste as bad.  DS does much better with the regular Poly-Vi-Sol.

  • thanks, all.  I'll try giving it to her directly when she's in the tub to avert staining in case she doesn't like it...
