I was just wondering if you ladies have an opinion about whether bumper pads are safe. I have read that they are made different in order to be safer for the baby but I am still unsure about ordering a crib set with a bumper pad. I know I wouldnt necessarily have to use it on the crib but those bedding sets are super expensive and I would hate to spend money on something I won't use. Let me know how you all feel!
Re: Opinion about using bumper bads
What is it about the crib skirts that aren't safe?
I think the concerns about the bumpers have to do with air flow in the crib, along with the babies being smothered by the bumpers.

Hii I've never heard of the crib skirt not being safe. What makes it unsafe??
I tried googling it but came up with nothing & you got me all curious lol.
I haven't done much research on this since everyone in my family for as long as I can remember have used bumpers on the crib & there are 12 of us "kids" that make up the newer generation of the family. Each one of us have always had them.

I plan on using them with my baby but that's a personal choice.
If you're worried about it, I saw that they sell "breathable" bumpers at BRU.
Since that's the main concern (the bumpers restricting airflow in the crib) the breathable bumpers allow the same comfort but with material that is...well...breathable. Just a thought!
BRU also sells individual fitted sheets and they're super cute. So instead of buying a whole set you can maybe invest in purchasing items separately and mix-matching your crib set. Good luck!

I prefer not to use padded bumpers because of the risk of suffocation and restricted air flow. DD sleeps with her face pressed in the corner of her crib, so regular bumpers are out for her whether I wanted them or not. Instead, we use the breathable bumpers. If she sleeps with her face pressed against them, they are mesh so she's still getting plenty of airflow, and they work well for keeping her arms and legs from getting stuck in the crib slats.
Instead of buying a whole crib set (which included the bumpers and quilt we wouldn't use) we bought individual pieces of the set we liked. Honestly, all we really use from the set is the crib sheets, a few of the blankets (not in the crib - another suffocation hazard) and the wall decor.

I never used the bumpers that came with my crib set, they were a PITA every time I needed to change the sheets, which was often. DS was very mobile, very early, and we never had a situation with arms/legs getting stuck in the crib rails.
My kid is otherwise Houdini, and he's never gotten anywhere near his crib skirt. I can't see it being a problem.
It was definitely a cheaper, plan, too! Have fun shopping!

I won't use padded ones because of the SIDS risk. I use a breathable one. DS has only gotten his leg stuck once, and he's 2 and 1/2. He's never bumped his head on the rails. The only time he's hurt himself is when he stands up and jumps. So there would really be no positive point to using a padded one for us.
I'm curious about the crib skirt too. We took that out once we moved the crib down to the lower level. Which was when he started pulling up and standing.
I wish that I didn't register for the bedding set. It was a waste. DS uses a quilt my mom made him now that he's old enough for a blanket. He doesn't even like the quilt that came with it. I would have just bought the breathable bumper and a bunch of cute sheets if I were doing it again.
The only bumper pads that I will use are breathable bumpers. And even those I won't add to the crib until around 6 months.
When DS was 5 weeks old, he had a freak choking incident that the doctors labeled a "near SIDS incident." He wore an apnea monitor every day for three months to alert me if he stopped breathing...So yeah, after going through that stress, there was no way I was about to do anything that could potentially increase the risk of SIDS. No bumpers, no blankets, no toys in the crib, etc. It's just not worth it for something "cute."
FWIW, we did order a full bedding set...All we use now is the crib sheet. That's it. Bedding sets are a complete waste of $$.
Haha I noticed that once I posted it, But in a way it works since the majority agree they are not completely safe for their little one!
