SMO ?

Aiden got his SMOs today.  I have a few questions....we were told that shoes 1/2 size bigger should fit.  Well, the SMOs (without Aiden wearing them) fit into both his current shoes and the bigger ones...except the width is not big enough...so the shoes wont velcro closed (it is too bulky wear the shoes velcro).  Both pairs are stride-rite...any suggestions on brands or types that may work?  The orthotics person said that the stride-rite sandals may work. Anyone used sandals with SMOs?  Also, does your LO wear long or short socks with the SMOs?  Thanks!

    We have DAFOs vs SMOs.  Have you taken the insole out of the shoes?  I was told by the guy (owner) of the shoe store we got DS2's shoes at that removing the insole increases the width.  I know it will increase the depth of the shoe.  If you haven't removed it, try that first.  Otherwise, we bought DS2 New Balance shoes.  He wears a 4 but we had to get a 6 (regular and we took the insoles out) for him. I thought we'd have to get a wide but I guess we didn't (and the PT thought the DAFO/shoe combo looked good).  DS2 wears crew socks with his DAFO's (the braces go just above his ankle).

    We go up one size and up in 1 width.    We also took the insert out of the shoe as well.  What I ended up doing is waiting until he physically had the DAFO in his shoe.  Matthew wears longer socks with his shoes since he also wears high tops.

    DS is probably getting DAFOs or SMOs soon, so we don't have them yet, but I've heard good things about going wider in the Stride Rites.  Right now he wears a wide, but they also have an extra-wide width.

    Thanks ladies.  The width inside the shoe isnt the problem....they are both extra wide.  Just the problem is just that we cant velcro them.  The inserts are taken out. Guess we are going shoe shopping today.  :)  Thanks.

    Yup, had same problem here - length & width were not the problem, just the velcro b/c that's where the bulk of the orthotic is (Sure steps right?). Answer - laces!!! We got New Balances with laces (I'm sure you could do Stride Rite too) and they fit perfect! I thought it was going to be a pain in the butt, but it's really not. We just double tie them so they don't come loose. Good luck!

    Ah, if it's just the width of the velcro, the laces sound perfect.

    Thanks!  I bought 4 pairs of shoes this weekend...none worked (worked when I put SMOs in...but not actually on feet.)  Not sure fit....custom made SMOs.....will try and find lace up shoes.  Thanks!

    Yep...all off Peyton's shoes don't fit with them.  I found a pair of nike's over the weekend, laceup & they fit fine.  She has striderite sandals, and they don't work either.  The nike's were a size larger.
