Hi, I'm popping over from Dec 2010 moms. I know this is far off because bike trailers aren't recommended until 1 yr of age, but I'm in the market for a bike trailer (I could be convinced on a bike seat, though). I'd love reviews. Having it convert to a jogger is a bonus, but we bike much more than jog so the former is more important (i.e. I won't mind if it is a "crappy" jogger stroller...I'm not assuming it'll be a BOB or anything.) We just have one kid now but I'd entertain the idea of a trailer that could hold 2. Not necessary, though. Please let me know if you know of a place that has reviews and/or if you have suggestions of what to get and/or what NOT to get! Thanks.
Re: XP: bike trailer / jogging stroller
we got a cheapy bike trailor from Fleet Farm. DD loves it and we didn't spent a lot on it. I like to use it when I take her on walks, too, because it's handle is higher than my regular strollers (I am 5'10") so I don't have to hunch over a little when using it! We got it last year when DD turned 1 for my DH's Father's Day gift. DD loves it once we start going but kinda freaks out when we put her helmet on.
Here's a thread I replied to on Health&Fitness about toddler helmets.
Ditto! I have a double chariot that we use for biking, running, and rollerblading. It can also be used for x-country skiing! They are expensive but worth the investment.
Someone mentioned on a previous post that you should really think about where you are going to be riding. Trailers are notoriously difficult for vehicles to see because they are so low. Exhaust fumes are also at LO's mouth level. I'm personally only comfortable with using a trailer on a rail trail or similar. I do not feel comfortable using one on the road near vehicles.
Rear seats are cause for concern because if the child makes a sudden move it can throw off your balance and cause you to crash.
This front seat gets great reviews and this is what we have started using if we are biking over to the in-laws or anywhere near the road. You can see the child's movements easily and adjust accordingly: https://www.weeride.com/Kangaroo-LTD-Special-Edition
We have a Chariot bike trailer. I love it. DD smiles from ear to ear the entire time we're out riding in it. Ours holds 2 kids, we have her in the center position now, since its just her. Ours converts to a stroller, but we didn't buy the conversion.
Also, trailers are incredibly safe, they have roll bars should they flip. They don't throw off the balance of the bike for you. And if you fall, they are protected, unlike in a seat on the bike where they would hit the ground. Also, they have suspension and the wheels are designed to make bumpers smoother. There is a bright orange flag on the back to indicate that there is a trailer behind the bike.
We have taken ours on roads and paths and I've never once felt like dd's safety was at risk.
Also, a helmet is incredibly important, no matter what you choose to bike ride with. My dd's head is so teeny, we ended up having to go to a few bike stores before we found one that fits her right. Ours is from the company Specalized and fits her really well. It ran about $40, but safety was our #1 concern.
