White tongue.... when is it not normal?

My baby is EBF and her tongue is super white. Not just that but the white part is raised and thick. I have tried to wipe it but it doesnt help much. Thoughts?

    Thrush?

I wonder this too? But it's only on her tongue and a lot of what I read said that it would also be on her gums or lips.

  • sounds like thrush to me.  Get it looked at asap - you both could end up with a nasty infection.

  • That sounds like what my friend described her son had when she had a UTI and it effected her milk that effected her LOs tongue and mouth. She didnt even know she had one until she took him to the pedi and they recommended she go get checked from her Dr. She got on the medicine and it cleared everything up.

  • If it is white and not just after a feed and you can not gently wipe it off it is likely thrush.  Call your pedi & they can call some Nystatin in for you (they may want to see your LO 1st though). It is usually given 3-4x/day for 7-10 days or 3 days past clearing.

Good luck. Oh, and it is super common :)

  • My pedi says that some white on the tongue can be normal just from the coating of milk.  She also says that thrush will cover more of the mouth than just the tongue.

  • Hmm. I appreciate the thoughts. It's only on her tongue and I can not wipe it off. I have no problems with my nipples.

Ill call Monday and see if the pedi will look at it.

If it won't wipe off at all, definitely could be thrush.  My LO has the same thing - my midwife and the LC thought it could be thrush (I have no symptoms) so they prescribed Nystain.  I've actually been using grapefruit seed extract which is supposed to work better - since I started, her tongue looks a bit less white.

I figured it couldn't hurt to use the GSE as there aren't any ill effects from it and if it is thrush, I'd hate for it to get worse.

  • It is probably thrush. I took my DS in to the doctor on Sunday because he was barely eating since it was too painful. I thought the white on the tongue was just milk residue so I didn't get it checked out as soon as I should have. Now he is taking the medicine and is eating like a champ. Get your LO checked out because it can be quite uncomfortable for them. Good luck!

  • DD's tongue is this way (EBF also) and I specifically asked the pedi about it. He said hers is not thrush. Google image "thrush tongue" and look at what you see... that cleared up a lot of doubt for me. But if it makes you feel better to ask your pedi, by all means you should. Hers won't wipe off either, she does not seem in pain during eating or any other time (besides gas), and my nips are perfectly fine as well. And I know I don't have a UTI. HTH.

Same with ours. I was convinced my LO had it and paranoid I'd get it, but they said as long as its just the tongue not to worry - its probably just milk anyways espeically in a breastfed baby - but to call them if it is in the roof of the mouth or sides.

  • I went in because nursing hurt really bad and found out that we had Thrush. My LO's tongue was barely white so it doesn't have to be spread throughout the entire mouth.
