Pedi suggested I start to use the childrens kind and gave me the correct dosages. I assume this is because DS is over 24 lbs, and that's sort of where the dose "stops" for the infant kind. But when I measured it out the childrens just seems like SO MUCH medicine!! I want to follow her advice, and obviously I trust her, but I was interested to see what everyone else uses.
Re: Do you use infants or childrens pain meds?
I just bought childrens this past fever since he is over 24lbs.

Jameson Adam 6/1/11
Allergic to Peas...so far
I know, and actually, after reading the latest news concerning J&J from the WSJ today, I just was interested to see who uses which one......
I started using Children's when DS had 4 ear infections back to back. The infants is just too small and more expensive. I just asked the pharmacist what the dosing would be (I told them what dosing we used in the infants and they converted it to Children's for me). We have oral syringes from the pharmacy from other meds he has been on so we just use those but he can take it from the Childrens cup thing its just less messy with the syringe.
Oh and FWIW DS is only 14lbs and his pedi said it was fine to use Childrens and confirmed the dosage the pharmacy told us.
I wasn't aware of them switching to one formula, but I think it's a smart move since many people seem confused about different dosing between the two. I assume that people will just use the children's and they will give appropriate dosing for an infant. DH is a pharmacist, I'll have to talk to him about it.
Mom, why are you washing my feed in the sink?!
You can't give ibuprofen to babies under the age of 6 months. The new Children's Tylenol formula will be for both infants and children. It will just be dosed by weight. So, there will be no going back and forth from Children's to Infants', which apparently has become an overdose risk. I think the attraction of Infants' drops is that it's more concentrated, so the volume of liquid dispensed is less for babies. I wonder what the new formula will be like...
hmm thats intresting. We got a dosing chart when DD was just born with childrens/infants with weights and doses. It goes up to age 10 or something because its got the chewable doses.
I am not happy to give LO a larger amount she has a hard enough time getting it down. Shes only 20 lbs or so - we havent even thought about making the switch.
This except for DD.
She uses the infant kind still, not the children's. 1 tsp. of infant medicine would be A LOT. Did you mean she should do 1 tsp. of children's? Because that would be correct according to the box instructions.
I agree, 1 tsp of infant medicine (80mg/1ml concentration) is TOO much, 1 tsp (5ml) would be 400mg, WAY too much. The correct dosage for a 25lb baby would be 180 mg of Tylenol, which is 2.25 ML, just under 1/2 a tsp of the infant, or 5.6ml of childrens tylenol (160mg/5ml).
Infant and children's medication is the same medication, just different dosage (such a plain and extra strength tylenol, same medication just more/less strength).
We have used children's for some time because L doesn't mind taking medications and its cheaper and when he was dealing with fever after fever the small infant bottles just didn't last long enough.
The maximum/correct dosage used by doctors, pharmacists and hospitals is
Tylenol 15mg/kg
Iburpofen (Advil, Motrin, etc) 10mg/kg
to figure out kg 1kg=2.2lbs, so roughly half...you can use a little less then that if you feel its too much (compared to the bottle) but if its not effective thats why, they may need the full dose. The bottles are very conservative to help prevent over dosing.
I hadn't heard that they were emilinating the infants but I think its a good idea to help prevent confusion like this!
