Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Do you use infants or childrens pain meds?

Pedi suggested I start to use the childrens kind and gave me the correct dosages. I assume this is because DS is over 24 lbs, and that's sort of where the dose "stops" for the infant kind. But when I measured it out the childrens just seems like SO MUCH medicine!! I want to follow her advice, and obviously I trust her, but I was interested to see what everyone else uses.

Re: Do you use infants or childrens pain meds?

  • DD was off the charts for growth for a while and hit 30 lbs sometime before 2 years (I can't remember when exactly right now). When she was around 20 or 21 months old, she had a fever I took her into the pedi for and it was at that point that our doctor reco'd going to children's Tylenol/Motrin. I didn't have to give meds to her on many occasions before that, so I'm not sure if she should have switched before.

  • DS is 25 pounds but I still use the infants because that's less I have to get him to swallow, I just give him a little more than the 1.875 ml dose, I asked the pharmacist and he said that's fine.

It's because the infants is more concentrated....

I know, and actually, after reading the latest news concerning J&J from the WSJ today, I just was interested to see who uses which one......

  • The infant medicine is much more concentrated than the children's - that's why it seems like it's a lot more.  We use the children's now because DD is 27 lbs.

  • I started using childrens when DS turned 2 just because he is finally about to drink out of the little cup and it is cheaper.

  • I dont know. I tried the chilrens a coupe days ago, that's when she vomited and had her seizure. I dont think it had to do with that, but it makes me nervous now. I am sticking to infants for a few more months. Mine is 29 pounds
  • They are going to stop making infant's tylenol later on this year and then there will only be childrens. Not sure what you're supposed to give your infant after that happens. Ibuprofen only?

  • I switched to children's around 1 year. The pedi gave me the dosage. Since DS can't use the cup that comes with them, I just ask the pharmacy for a couple oral syringes whenever I buy a bottle.

We switched the boys around a year and Aubrey just recently to Children's.  The pedi said they both worked the same and it was cheaper!

  • I started using Children's when DS had 4 ear infections back to back. The infants is just too small and more expensive. I just asked the pharmacist what the dosing would be (I told them what dosing we used in the infants and they converted it to Children's for me). We have oral syringes from the pharmacy from other meds he has been on so we just use those but he can take it from the Childrens cup thing its just less messy with the syringe.

Oh and FWIW DS is only 14lbs and his pedi said it was fine to use Childrens and confirmed the dosage the pharmacy told us.

  • We started using children's once he hit 24 lbs.  It was easier for us,  since we have older DD...only one type to buy.

I wasn't aware of them switching to one formula, but I think it's a smart move since many people seem confused about different dosing between the two. I assume that people will just use the children's and they will give appropriate dosing for an infant. DH is a pharmacist, I'll have to talk to him about it.

  • We use Children's Advil. Yea it seems like a lot of medicine, but the children's kind is less concentrated than the infant's kind.

  • Infant, if I can find it and I have some. Children's if I'm out of infant (since we already have it for Preston).

The doc gave us the go ahead to switch at a year (because Bean is freakishly huge), and gave me an oral syringe to use (more accurate than the cup), along with the correct dosage.  He hasn't had any problems.

  • The pedi gave us a bottle of Children's Advil today, so I guess we switched today :)  Since the Infant Tylenol drops are going to be discontinued by everyone, I guess we'll switch to that the next time I go buy Tylenol for DS.

You can't give ibuprofen to babies under the age of 6 months.  The new Children's Tylenol formula will be for both infants and children.  It will just be dosed by weight.  So, there will be no going back and forth from Children's to Infants', which apparently has become an overdose risk.  I think the attraction of Infants' drops is that it's more concentrated, so the volume of liquid dispensed is less for babies.  I wonder what the new formula will be like...

  • hmm thats intresting. We got a dosing chart when DD was just born with childrens/infants with weights and doses. It goes up to age 10 or something because its got the chewable doses.

I am not happy to give LO a larger amount she has a hard enough time getting it down. Shes only 20 lbs or so - we havent even thought about making the switch.

My DS is a peanut (20 lbs) but we've been using children's meds for awhile. Our pedi said it is fine and my husband is a pharmacist so he doses it for DS's size. We do 1/2 tsp Tylenol and 3/4 tsp Motrin, which are both on the conservative side.

fyi the correct dose is 10 mg/kg. if your kiddo has a fever he isnt getting enough. give him a tsp

She uses the infant kind still, not the children's.  1 tsp. of infant medicine would be A LOT.  Did you mean she should do 1 tsp. of children's?  Because that would be correct according to the box instructions.

I agree, 1 tsp of infant medicine (80mg/1ml concentration) is TOO much, 1 tsp (5ml) would be 400mg, WAY too much. The correct dosage for a 25lb baby would be 180 mg of Tylenol, which is 2.25 ML, just under 1/2 a tsp of the infant, or 5.6ml of childrens tylenol (160mg/5ml).

Infant and children's medication is the same medication, just different dosage (such a plain and extra strength tylenol, same medication just more/less strength).

We have used children's for some time because L doesn't mind taking medications and its cheaper and when he was dealing with fever after fever the small infant bottles just didn't last long enough.

The maximum/correct dosage used by doctors, pharmacists and hospitals is

    Tylenol 15mg/kg
    Iburpofen (Advil, Motrin, etc) 10mg/kg

to figure out kg 1kg=2.2lbs, so roughly half...you can use a little less then that if you feel its too much (compared to the bottle) but if its not effective thats why, they may need the full dose. The bottles are very conservative to help prevent over dosing.

I hadn't heard that they were emilinating the infants but I think its a good idea to help prevent confusion like this!
