Trouble TTC

XP : Surgical cyst removal

I've posted on this board before but continued to post primarily on TTGP.  A quick background - TTC for 7 cycles (on 8 now) but 9 months.  I am somewhat irregular. HSG all clear.  Bloodwork at CD3 good, BW at 7DPO showed low p4 at 7.8.  My RE discovered a large cyst at my first visit.  He said no clomid, and was hopeful the cyst would go down on its own, but it has not.  It is still 13 cm.

So, today he told me I have to have an MRI and surgery.  I was wondering if any of you had a surgical removal before and/or could provide me with additional info, like whether I need a second opinion, what to expect, impact on fertility, etc.  The doc gave me some info, but was somewhat tight lipped on waiting for the MRI...

Not the news I wanted, but my head is up and I will forge on.

  • How long has this cyst been with you?  Are you still getting AF?  Is it producing hormones or just hanging out?

  • We have no idea how long!  I went for an annual around february. She said nothing about the possibility of a cyst.  There was no mention of it at my annual prior thereto.  I have had regular pelvic exams, etc.

I get AF about every 30-34 days (with one longer cycle mixed in).  I have been on BCPs prior to TTC.  I was not on BCP at my annual in february.  My LP has been pretty regular, except last cycle it was 15 days.

The RE thought the cyst was "hormonal" and would go down through the next cycle.  It didn't budge.  So he is having me get an MRI and then has to take it out.

I'm just wondering what to expect, etc.  He said he thinks it is what is impacting my ability to get pregnant (all BW looks ok, I O on my own, although a little late, DH's SA is good, HSG was good).  I'm kind of nervous about it, and the possibility that he says he may have to take the entire ovary.

You do not O late... CD14 is not when you are "suppose" to O... in fact I read somewhere that most women have a longer than 28 day cycle.  CD18-21 seems quite perfect.  I would definitely get a 2nd opinion if they are going to take out an Ovary!  What about 3 months on BCP to help?  Probably not what you want to hear, but better than losing an ovary!

I thought the same thing - that he would put me on BCPs.  That's what he said at our last meeting.  Then he said because of the size and the fact that it didn't go down at all, he was very worried about torsion, etc. and said it has to come out.  He didnt say he was removing the ovary, just that he couldn't guarantee and/or tell me that when he got in he might have to remove it, and/or could not remove the cyst without damage to the ovary.

I am going to get the MRI and then take that with my other information to another physician my friend recommended (she is the head nurse at a major city hospital on the labor and delivery floor).  I just spoke to her.

  • Glad to see you are going to get a 2nd opinion; especially if you aren't comfortable with what your current dr is or isn't telling you.  Cysts can be tricky.  If you are cycling regularly with it, I would think it isn't producing hormones.  Right now I am in a cyst cycle, so I understand your frustrations.  I get them every month, this is the first where it was too large to do a meds cycle.  Hoping you get all the answers you need.  ::sending cyst shrinking vibes your way::
