introducing high allergy foods

How and when did you introduce peanut products or shell fish?

Shellfish - I made crab cakes the other night and he loved them.

Peanut products - waiting until he's 3 per pedi's rec.

  • Haven't done either.  Will ask at A's 2-year well visit in August.

But my ped was OK with shellfish / tree nuts after 18 months.  Peanuts they said age 3... but I'll prob. try when my SIL is around (with her epi pen) at age 2.

  • Introduced peanut butter right around 12 months (remember to spread it thinly as it can be a choking hazzard) and she loved it. We gave her shellfish around 15 months.  Our pedi suggested giving them at breakfast/lunch the first time so you have time to see if there will be a reaction and if so get it treated without it being a big deal.    Good luck - yummy!
  • Our pedi says no nuts or peanut butter until 2.  Other than that, he was good for anything else at age 1.   I haven't given him shellfish yet, tho.  Just hasn't come up yet.

DS has not had shellfish or PB yet.  He has eaten almonds, w/o side effects.  Our pedi is overly cautious, and said neither until 3.

  • Lurker here, just started lurking on this board -- I'm usually on SAIF.

Giving the food early in the day is a good idea.  It is not unusual for a peanut allergy to present itself on a subsequent exposure though.  Lucas had peanut butter a handful of times before he had his reaction.  With that in mind, I would give PB early in the day for the first 10 times, meaning I wouldn't give PB at dinner or as a PM snack.
