Canada Babies

Anyone in BC, Hospital questions

Hi Ladies,

Jumping over to ask a few questions....  Sorry

My BFF lives in Burnaby and delivered a  baby girl 2 days ago.  Her whole delivery was a surprise.  She had no idea she was pregnant!  Very Crazy to me!!!!

The baby was delivered at her apt and then transported by ambulance to BC Womens Hospital.  My BFF did not stay at the hospital the 1st night and is now staying there.  She is telling me that they allow her to come and go even though she is admitted as long as she gets a "Pass".  Can anyone explain this system to me?

Another thing I don't understand  is she says the baby is healthy but has to stay in the hospital 7-10 days.  She has to gain back her birth weight and then gain weight for 3 consecutive days.  Is this the norm in Canada?

I guess I am just really struggling with this whole situation and am debating booking a trip up to help.  This friend does have some issues and I just have a terrible feeling that something isn't right.

I appreciate any insight.

  • I live in BC and as far as i know having the baby stay in while you are released is usually a health reason, like you stated baby is a low birth weight, but the only person i know whos baby had to stay only a few days about 4 was allowed to stay with baby and stayed in the hospital. Im not sure i've never heard of the pass system.. sorry i cant help more, seems a bit odd.. =/

  • I live in BC and have had 2 babies in the lower mainland at Royal Columbian and Burnaby General. Never heard of a pass for mom to get to leave and come back to the hospital, very odd!

As for the long hospital stay, it is typical for babies to lose up to 10% of their birth weight, perfectly fine. If they lose more than this before the discharge (typically 2 days for vaginal delivery and 3 days for c/s) then they might want to keep mom and baby in a bit longer until baby starts gaining weight. But 7-10 days? Never  heard of that unless there are several other problems with baby and/or mom.

  • I've had 3 kids and I find it weird that she didn't stay in the hospital the first night?? That's very odd - they usually don't release moms who have just given birth.  Secondly, if you have been released from the hospital and your baby is still in there usually due to health reasons you don't need a "pass" to leave the hospital.  However, I did have a baby in the BC Children's hospital and I pretty much stayed by her side the entire time, even though they would have had no problem with me leaving.

Something about the story doesn't seem to add up.
