2nd Trimester

tightness in lower abdomen

Hello,

I'm waiting for my doctor's office to open today and will be talking to the NP/MW, but thought I'd ask you ladies as well. For the last week, I've periodically had a tightness in my lower abdomen - below my bump but above my pubic bone. It lasts for less than a minute and doesn't hurt, but is a bit uncomfortable. It kind of feels like I'm holding an abdominal crunch or like when you tighten the muscles in your leg or arm (but in the area I described).

I don't know if it is gas/bowel related, the baby pushing up against something, stretching, or BH contractions. I'm a first timer and will be 21 weeks on Monday. Any thoughts???

Thanks!!!

Re: tightness in lower abdomen

  • I get it a lot too, typically with kicks so I believe mine is associated with the baby moving. The tightness is a bit uncomfortable but it makes me think the baby is rolling or pushing up against something. I've started to think of it as a little "hello" from the baby :)

I'm sure your doctor will tell you everything is fine, but if not let me know!

  • I've experienced that too and I will be asking my midwife at my next appointment this Tues. I suspect it is BH contractions but I want her answer anyway. I'm 20w5d so we've got really close EDDs.  Cool.

  • I've had the same thing happen to myself. My doctor told me it was BH and not to worry about it, unless it became painful.

  • I just talked to my OB about this today.  Particularly when I walk long distances I get that same feeling in the same spot.  He said it probably is BH, but unless they continue coming and going for a period of time then I shouldn't be worrie.d

  • sometimes I think it's the baby, but other times I think that it's Braxton Hicks.

  • Update: talked to the MW and she said it was most likely BH which can come with all the stretching, but since I have also been peeing a lot lately she had me give a urine sample that they'll test for a uti/bladder infection.
