talk to me about working out

I feel like garbage, my body is ugh! I need to get back in shape for ME! Do you work out? Where? How often? What do you do to keep/get in shape? Also what do you think reasonable gym fees are? So far, I've looked at 3 with prices from $58/month-$90/month (all with child care)....

I don't.....but I, too, don't like how I feel these days.  I look forward to people's answers.  I don't think joining a gym will be an option for me right now, but I need to start something.  We bought an elliptical machine before Henry was born, maybe I just need to start actually using it!  Embarrassed

When I was on maternity leave, I did nothing! It was winter so I was too lazy to go out even for a walk. I still have stubborn 5 lbs (since I am short, i look like I still have 10 lbs to lose) that I can't shake off ugh. When I went back to work, I started going back to the gym across the street from my office. I go during lunch time which is the only time that would work for me. Depending on how busy I am at work, I go 2x-5x a week. I pay $60/month and that's without childcare. Now, I really have to work on my eating habits though. I am taking it a day at a time :-P.

  • I wish I had more time (and motivation!) to go regularly.  But I do make it to a class once a week or so.

gym fees vary quite a bit around here too.  Ours is about $100/month and we get a small discount because of my employer healthcare - but it is a massive health club with lots of stuff to take advantage of and both MH and I are interested in the non-traditional stuff like the fact that it comes with unlimited fitness classes like yoga and the les mills body pump/flow/step/rpm. And MH goes to their set times for pick up basketball games - multiple inside full courts are hard to find at gyms.  They also have childcare and children's programs that I don't really use because I'm not SAH but we do use the pool a lot to take J swimming a lot.

The $50/month ones in my area are pretty basic - machines, weights, a very limited classes that you may need to pay an additional fee for.

  • I hear ya on feeling "ugh".  I just stopped nursing and I think I already gained a couple pounds.   Crying

I haven't been to the gym much since I gave birth and I haven't taken Kaya to the child care there yet.  My gym membership is $24/year (I paid like $800 up front for 5 years, then $24/year after the 5 years.)  It's 24 Hour Fitness so it's good at almost any 24 Hr Fitness location (yay Hawaii!) but the child care is only open from 8am-1pm and 4-8pm at our club.  And I think it's $2 with a 2 hour max.

Last fall we were training for a half marathon so we'd take Kaya out in the BOB to run with us.  I'm sure when we move back to Hawaii that will be our routine.  Now we've started doing Insanity (which really is INSANE).  We actually just started a couple days ago and just put her in the PNP while we work out.  The first day she didn't like it so much - cried/whined for about 35 minutes but we just let her go since we were right there and she was just bored.  Today she was fine, just playing with her toys and watching us.  Hope she keeps it up!

  • We, too bought an elliptical before K was born, but I didn't use it beforehand.  Since he was born (10 months ago), I've used it 3 times.  :( sad, I know.

I usually work out after DH comes home from work (between 6-7pm), so he can watch K.  I actually just picked up a Kathy Smith DVD pilates video yesterday to start doing while K is napping.  I have a few other DVDs (Denise Austin and Jillian Michaels) that I can rotate throughout the week.

Now, to just find the motivation to work out and not be online when he's napping!

For what it's worth, when I lived in SF and paid for a gym membership, it was $60 a month and it also included use of the pool, tennis courts, and all classes (like yoga, pilates, kickboxing, etc.)  The $60 rate was valid for people under 30 yrs, After that, it went up to $98 a month.

  • I go for my 6 week pp appointment on Friday so next week I hope to start the same thing!

Luckily, we have a treadmill in our basement along with some free weights, etc.  Now, it just finding the motivation now to do it :(  It's sooooo hard for me to get started on routines, ack!

  • I got the 24-hour membership like Christine. It was about $700-something for 3 years (about $20/month) and then $50/year after that. I don't use it often enough anymore, but at those prices, it's still a good deal. It's good at most 24-hours across the country and you can take a bunch of classes too -- I used to do spin and yoga. Child care is about $3 per session per kid, but I don't know the youngest age they take -- I'm not ready for that yet.

Since I live in HI, I find it easiest to workout with LO outdoors. I haven't been good about exercising regularly, but we go walking a lot and I'm always chasing him around, so I just count that.

I HAD a 24 hour fitness membership but of course there's not a single one in Milwaukee! Go figure! I went to one gym here and tried the child care and it went really well the few times I went. I was SO nervous to leave the kids but I checked in on them after 30 mins and they were fine. I worked out an hour both times so it wasn't long but I felt so good after.

I wish the weather was nice enough here to go outside on a regular basis but lately it's been raining or chilly (too cold for G) every single day! Yuck!
