I have a friend who is going through a really tough time right now. Divorced last year and laid off earlier this year. Between her student loans (which she can't get forgiveness for and they won't defer for her any longer) and the debt her ex racked up that she got in the divorce settlement, she can't pay her bills. I told her that she should at least talk to an attorney for some advice about bankruptcy. She said she had been thinking about it for a month but didn't know where to start.
So, anyone have a recommendation I can pass along? TIA!
Re: Bankruptcy lawyer recos?
No recommendations. I just wanted to let you know that you can't be relieved of student loan debt through bankruptcy. So if that's a significant portion of her debt, bankruptcy may not be worth the time, money, and effort.
Good luck to your friend.
That's what I meant about "can't get forgiveness for"...I just didn't phrase it correctly! LOL
Evidently her ex racked up close to $20,000 in credit cards and went and bought a new car right before leaving her. It really stinks.
Will ditto this!! David is very helpful in many different areas!
