3rd Trimester

FTM 36 week appt possible preeclampsia , do you have any experience with this ?

Yesterday was my 36 week appointment and my blood pressure was 146/96 the first time and then it was 138/86 before i left my appointment . My blood pressure normally runs around 117/70 so both of those blood pressures are high for me . The doctor also said i had a small amount of protien in my urine and this is a first for the pregnancy also . Now I am at home still waiting on blood tests to come back and im doing a 24 hr urine test today .. I see my doctor agian tomorrow morning because of these reasons and im just wondering what anyone elses experiences with possible preeclampsia has been ...what where your symptoms , what tests did they run, what did the doctor decided to do about it ?  Also if you every had a 24hr urine test done how long did it take to recieve those results in a situation like this ...im just wondering cause mine arent getting turned in until tomorrow morning and its a friday so im wonding if i will hear back the same day or if i will have to wait till monday . Also my only other symptoms have been some swelling in my feet, ankles, and hands ( could just be from pregnancy though ? ) , I have been having some spots in my vision occasionally but i associated it with just standing or doing something to quick ,and i have been having really bad upper right side pain near my ribs but i also assume thats from the baby  ..

  • I had pre-e with my first pregnancy, but it showed up around week 21. Lizzie was delivered at 36w1d with no complications. I would think since you're 36 weeks already, your dr. might start talking about a c/s pretty soon. I was on bedrest from 23 weeks, and at 33 weeks I was put in the hospital, and had 24 hr urine tests every 3 days, along with blood draws (to look for kidney and liver functions and make sure I didn't have HELLP.)

With the combination of symptoms you're having (spots, swelling, protein in urine, and sudden rise in blood pressure) I wouldn't be surprised if your dr. didn't wait on the results of the 24 hr urine to make a decision. We had an amnio to check Lizzie's lungs. Since they were ok, we were scheduled for a c/s the day after the amnio.

  • sounds like pre-e (sorry!)

i had it with my first pregnancy but it was very short-lived b/c i went into labor at 37w,4d and my BP didn't start climbing until 36 weeks.  i had to rest as much as i could every day, drink lots of fluids, stop exercising altogether.  my BP was 140/100 at its highest and i was unbelievably swollen - cankles don't even remotely describe it!  also, i gained about 2 pounds/day from retaining fluids and i rarely went to the bathroom.

  • Yes, I think you probably do have pre-e.  They will most likely deliver the baby early.  I have had protein in my urine since March although BP has been fine and no swelling or blurry vision.  Your doctor may start scheduling you for weekly non-stress tests and biophysical profiles.  I have had these about every week since I started spilling protein.

You will probably hear back within a day or two about your 24 hour urine results, I have had to do the test twice and it never took long to hear back.

    Good luck

  • Your blood pressure and symptoms are similar to mine at 35 weeks. I gained 9 lbs in to weeks, and this whole pregnancy, I'd only been up 10, so it was a big jump for me.

I have weekly appointments, and he mentioned inducing, but said he wanted to wait a week to see how I feel, and if I have any headaches, or spots, to go to the ER.

I've been monitoring my BP at home, and its never gotten any higher than the 140/90ish range it was at my appointment. Try to take it easy, reduce your salt, drink lots of lots of fluid.

Write down all your questions for your doctor so you don't forget. Which reminds me, I need to go start on my list myself...

  • I went to the OB for my 38w appointment yesterday and my bp was high. They took it 3 times, 2 times before I saw the doc and then again at the end. It was always around 147/83. My doctor told me that she had to send me to the hospital for that, so off I went. After they monitored my bp (while I was on my side, not sitting like at the OB's office), took my blood, and tested my urine they sent me home. For me it was just stress and not pre-e. That's the only experience I have with it.

Sending good thoughts your way that it's not pre-e!

  • I agree it does sound like pre-e. My had pre-e with my first it showed up at 32 weeks. I was at my appointment and she was measuring small, and was very swollen. The doctor sent me for a 24 hour urine test and some other blood work and made at appointment with MFM. I didn't have pain on my right side, mine was actually in the middle I too assumed it was the baby and had the pain for a while since they kept questioning if the pain was on the right side I didn't realize it was related.

When I went to MFM two days after my appointment they did an ultrasound to check DD size and then set up a Non-Stress test before the Non Stress test the nurse decided to take my blood pressure she took it 5 times because she couldn't believe the number it was 220/100 and something. I was rushed up to Pre natal care and put straight to bed. They attempted to get my blood pressure down but at that point it seems there was no hope and I was scheduled for an emergency c-section. My daughter is 2 1/2 now and is a very healthy little girl.

The point of this story is not to scare you but let you know if it is pre-e it is not the end of the world you and your little one can get through this.
