what to pack for the hospital?

so this is my first and its about that time to pack a bag. I have a list from magee but i would like to hear from some one who has experienced this on what they felt was needed.

Re: what to pack for the hospital?

  • I just had my second baby at Magee.  With the first baby (18 months ago) I overpacked.  This time I learned.  I would definitely pack (1) a change of clothes and (1 outfit) clothes to sleep or lounge in.  Also, don't forget your own shampoo and hair products and makeup.  The most important thing I packed this time is my laptop.  I always say I am going to read my magazines but I never did.  The hospital was so quiet that when I tried to read I would fall asleep.  So pack the laptop, it will make time fly especially when you don't have so many visitors.

  • Thank you ! i was worried about over packing. i will be at magee too! they suggest pillows did you happen to bring your own?
  • Yes, bring your own pillow...with a bright colored pattern or anything other than a white pillow case.  It was very comforting at night to have my own pillow.  Also, they give you mesh undies to wear and gigantic pads...both were very uncomfortable to me, so as soon as I could walk I changed into some big granny panties and big overnight pads with wings...I felt a thousand times better.

Also, don't forget your personal things like toothbrush, shampoo and makeup.   Hard candies are great especially preggo pops or preggo candies and I had a c-section so the boppy was a must have for nursing LO.

Good luck and congrats if you have any other ?'s just ask...and if I think of anything else I will let you know!

  • Lots and lots of pillows! i brought 3. I also brought a nightgown and a robe and slipppers. I made sure everything was black because you bleed a lot ( :/ ) Bring your own toiletries. I overpacked but i wanted to be prepared. The mesh underwear were helpful because you don't want to ruin your own underwear and the huge pads were overwhelming but they suit their purpose. I took a bunch home with me. The hospital was extremely noisy for me and we never got sleep. Make sure your nurse washes her hands before she touches your baby. I had to tell mine to.

I hope you have a great experience!

  • Great ideas!  Also don't forget chapstick (your lips may get dry a lot), hand lotion (if you like your own), a CAMERA (lol!), your car seat (surprisingly, so many couples forget this!), and your cell phone charger.  :) Also, your IPOD! :)
  • I made a list of things to pack for my labor and stay bag. Includes all the things I can put in it before time and all the last minute things as well. Also a MP3 player,a notepad and pen, camera with extra batteries and money (bills and change) also, snacks and other things as well. If you want the list, let me know and I can e-mail it to you. Also, I plan on putting all my last minute things in the bags when i am done using them for so when my water breaks while I am at home,I dont have to rush on putting them and forgetting things.Ill be busy calling my doula, husband if not home and in-laws (if not at the house) and getting my 3 year old ready and updating her daily schedule with the person who is watching her. Also if my water breaks when I am out and about, someone can stop by the house and grab my bags.
