NBR: Annoyed with repair man

Here's my attempt to liven up the board, on a day where I am staying home waiting for this home improvement guy...

He was referred to us by my ILs, he has done a ton of work for them and they raved about him, so we hired him to install a new door in our basement and run electric in our garage and also run the electric on our back deck so we can have a light out there.

He came 2 weeks ago, at 8am, with a door. Spent about 30 minutes in the basement and then started calling my name and told me that the door he ordered was too short and that he'd be back next week (didn't bother to install the electric for some reason?)

So, he calls DH last night at 8pm to let him know that the new door that he had ordered was in and he'd like to come today. DH didn't call him back until this morning at 8am- no answer, so he left a message. He tried calling again at 11am. I called him at noon, he has not answered any of our calls and we still haven't heard from him. I am wondering if he'll show up any minute or not at all.

I just texted DH "I know your parents think this guy is great but if you ask me he totally sucks"

  • Fire him. B can do all of that for you. Wink

FTR - I'd be super annoyed, too. Honestly, I don't mix well with contractors. Next time I see you, remind me to tell you the story about the guy we hired to install countertops in our old house. It's classic.

WHY didn't I think of that?! Here's the problem- we have already paid this guy over $500 because he had to buy the door. Big mistake on our part.

ACK! Has he cashed the check, already?

  • Not sure. I have to ask J... he isn't worried about this because his parents are so sure of this guy- but I'm starting to wonder.

  • I'm sure he'll follow through. I'm just so impatient about stuff like that. Stick out tongue

Me too, especially when it's so nice out and I am stuck here waiting!

  • I say if he hasn't answered or confirmed that he was coming today you leave and do your own thing! I would NOT wait around on this dude. I can't stand contractors who don't have good lines of communication.

  • He just called me and said the door hasn't come in yet! I can't believe it, since he left DH a voicemail last night saying the door was in. Maybe he thinks I don't communicate with my husband? Wth? I called DH right away and told him to call the guy and find out what his deal is!

  • FYI- We are working on small projects around here to list our house this time next year...Anywho- I stopped in that Surplus store on beechmont across from Lowes. I was actually surprised at the selection and prices. I found a front door I want for $280, similar door at Home Depot was $599

  • I feel you on the door issues.  Our contractor only measured the width of the door and said we needed a standard 33" door.  We went to Lowe's, bought a door and screen door.  I got a call from the contractor yesterday that said the door was too tall.  WTF!?  And they had already taken out the old door and ripped out the frame so we were screwed.  He held his breath and cut our brand new door and just prayed it didn't splinter.  I am happy to report it did not but I'm still pis$ed about the whole thing.  Now we have to return the screen door and special order.  What contractor doesn't measure everything!?
