Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Losing hair by the fist fulls!?

I heard that it's normal to lose hair after birth but I am losing tons of hair! I dread washing it cause I lose handfuls in the shower and then handfuls when I brush it out and blow dry. I have a small balding spot because of it and my son is 4 months old. It's making me self conscious. Should I be worried, anyone else having this much of a problem?

Re: Losing hair by the fist fulls!?

  • Totally normal.   I got my hair cut yesterday for the first time since I was 7 mos. pregnant (yeah I know) and my hair dresser goes "Aw you have post partum hair" and showed me a spot where I was totally balding.  Uh, thanks. Hah.

She said its totally normal and she sees it all the time.   DD was about 4 months old when I really started to notice it, and just this week I've noticed new hair growth around my hairline.  My hair dresser told me I have new hair coming in all over.

  • No bald spots here yet, but my DS thinks he needs to contribute and pull some out as well. I can't win!

  • I had the same thing happen after I was done nursing Emma. I think that might have been the cause of it for me, breast feeding for a long time. I didn't have that issue after having my son or Isla.
  • Mine is coming out that much as well! Luckily, I had really thick hair so nothing noticeable, but I can definitely tell my hair is thinner. I hear it usually disappears around 6 months...I feel disgusting, especially since I'm finding my hair EVERYWHERE!

  • Mine started falling out when DS was 2 months old, and is STILL falling out by the fist fulls... it's in the shower, in the carpets, the kids beds, laundry, EVERYWHERE... so frustrating, but hopefully it will end soon. It happened after DD was born too, but I got KU'ed after a few months of hairloss and it just started growing like crazy again. GL, you're not alone.

Some things that I pretend help, but not real sure... continue taking prenatals (you should anyway if you plan on having more children in the future) and eat lots of broccoli and other things high in folic acid.

  • I am still taking my prenatal vitamins because I am breastfeeding. I used to have thick hair too before I was pregnant and then during the pregnancy my hair was fabulous! I could make wigs with the amount of hair I lose, I find it everywhere too! Even in my LO diaper! lol Glad to know it's normally and not alone : )

It's normal, but very unfortunate.  Mine has been falling out like crazy...I find balls of it all over the place (how is that possible?)  I'm hoping it stops soon.

  • Mine is doing the same. I have thin hair as is, I am scared of what may happen if it continues for 2-3 more months. I am starting to understand why people get the "mom" cut!

  • YES! And it's driving me nuts. My kid constantly has handfuls of it and my bed looks like a german shepherd slept there. I am going to get it all cut off...
