Question for 2+ Mamas

Seriously, how do I pick a diaper pail? I've read every review, every book suggestion, asked random people on the street. Why is this one baby item trying to take over my usually decisive self?

So for those of you who have BTDT, what do you recommend? TIA!

Re: Question for 2+ Mamas

  • if i had to do it all over again, i think i'd get a regular kind of pail with a lid. either you buy costly refills, or the pail stinks to high heaven once you start solids. i have the one that takes regular 13 gallon bags, and despite the 2 boxes of baking soda at the bottom, it just plain old stinks. the best solution imho is take your trash out every night and you don't really need one.... but i would definitely skip the ones that need special refills.

Honestly, I never even looked at them b/c I think they're unnecessary and overpriced.  I just got a small, regular ol' pop-up lid garbage can at K-Mart and a package of small garbage bags.  I still have the same package of bags I bought before DD was born!  It works fine.

Once her poops started to really stink we just started taking the smelly diapers to the kitchen garbage or right to the garage.  I keep a box of baking soda in the bottom of the can as well to help with any smell.

  • I'm not a second timer, but I did use a Diaper Genie extensively when I babysat full time.  It did not hold in the stink for me, and I ended up just taking poopy diapers straight outside to the garbage.

The diaper champ worked great to keep the stink out!  We also used stick on air fresheners inside the pail to add extra freshness.

  • We just use a regular garbage can - a very small one so it gets emptied often. I didn't want to mess with diaper pails that need special refills, etc. Just a garbage bag and a can with a lid work fine if you stay on top of emptying it.

We have had a diaper genie for 6 years and love it! In fact, I'm going to get a replacement soon because we've used this one to death. It's on it's last leg. It's definitely not stink-free, but it's fine. We keep it in the closet and it's never been repulsive to change, by any means. It really only stinks when you've got your nose down in it. The refills cost $, but I just pick them up one or two at a time at walmart when I'm buying diapers, no biggie. And we have a reg trash can with a lid in the closet also, for the wet diapers. That's a way to save money on the refills--only throw the poopy ones in it. I'm sure this doesn't make your dilemma any easier, but it's what works for us!

This exact same thing. (you can use plastic grocery bags)

I looked at the link. This is the pail that I have too, I just didn't remember what it was called.

  • We use the Diaper Genie II Elite (link goes to target.com).  It does a lot better job than just using a trash can.  I don't mind buying the refills.  They are for sale in a lot of different stores, so they're readily available.

We used a regular trash can on our main floor and the genie in our bedroom.  Even though we emptied both regularly, the Genie contained the odor so much better.  Does it do a perfect job?  I don't think anything out there does - but I think it's worth the money.

  • We nixed the diaper pail the second month and just started taking the diapers out with the regular trash. Also, most of the time, solids were dumped into the toliet before we threw the diaper away. You are actually not supposed to put human feces in the landfill...We're going cloth this time around since I already did the dumping.
  • We've only ever used the Diaper Genie. I think it's by Playtex.  THe first one was the original Diaper Genie, the second one we bought was the Elite. Both worked great!  I would put a small box of Arm & Hammer at the bottom just so it wouldn't smell. Not that it did, it was more of DH and his strong sense of smell. Dork. : )

  • Diaper champ was great and used regular Costco plastic trash bags. I am buying a new one for this baby.

You can buy the vanilla scented bags to go in those cans=amazing. They help mask some of the smell and when you have a little baby, you fill up the can quicker and really don't smell much at all. I had a diaper genie given to me with 3 packs of bags total with ds#3 and I hated it by the end of the first roll. I gave it away along with a wipey warmer.

We had a diaper genie, but it was a pain in the butt to use. Now we don't use a diaper pail. We just keep a bunch of plastic Walmart bags on the changing table. When DS poops we take the bag out to the garbage can in the garage.  I can't imagine any diaper pail that would contain that smell.
