Babies: 0 - 3 Months

sleeping longer at night?

LO is still only sleeping anywhere from 1 hour - 3 and a half hours a night.  Only about 3 or 4 times has he slept for more then 3 and a half hours. Even if he does sleep between 3 and 5 hours, he will then eat and go back to sleep but then wake up every hour and a half after that.

Anyone else? When will he start sleeping longer? I don't even care about STTN, I just want more then 1-3 hours of sleep at a time cause I'm going back to work next week!

Re: sleeping longer at night?

  • I am so with you and we're at 9+ weeks.  Last night he slept 11-3 which is fine I guess, but then after eating and getting him back down at 3:45 he was up again at 4:45!  I always try a paci and just snuggling to see if he'll go back to sleep, but nope, he was hungry.  Back to sleep at 5:15 but then crying at 5:45.  This time I just pulled him into bed and he slept on me until 7 when DS1 woke up.

This is killing me.  I wish I had an answer.

  • I'm right there with you.  I'm so jealous of all of these moms who are reporting that their babies sleep in their crib, 9-11 hours straight every night and have since 6 weeks.  My DD sleeps in 3 hour chunks, usually, but toward morning it turns into 1-2 hours, or even just 45 minutes.  She's almost 11 weeks.  They say that 90% of babies will SSTN by 3 months, so we'll see.  We do co-sleep, so that may be causing her to wake up more often...she gets a whiff of the boob and decides she's hungry even if she just ate 2 hours before.  We're planning to transition her to her crib when she's a little over 3 months, and hopefully that will help her sleep longer.

I have no suggestions for you b/c I'm right there w/ you!  LO is 10wk5d and does the exact same thing.  Now we are getting into the bad habit of pulling him into bed with us from 5 on and then he'll sleep great...but it's something I'm not 100% comfortable with and I end up waking up constantly checking on him or b/c I'm cold b/c I have the blankets all the way down around my waist!  I'm going out later to get a RnP in hopes of that working miracles like it has for others!!

  • we are right there with you. ds slept for 6.5 hours one time and that was in his swing with me on the couch next to him. other wise he is just starting to give us maybe 3 hours at a time but usually more like 2. he also sleeps really well when he's in our bed. i have only done that twice but i was so tired i needed him to sleep. i am also going back to work in a little over a week and i cannot imagine how i am going to get through my day on even less sleep than i have now.

  • Do you guys feed your lo before you put them down?  I feed her right before I put her down and she will sleep from 10-5.  Even when she was a newborn she would sleep for atleast 4-5 hours.

Yup, but it seems to make no difference.  The one time he did sleep 6 hours he actually went to sleep 2 hours after nursing.  Makes no sense.

  • I'm with you! DD is generally up at least every 2 hours. Sometimes she will do 3 hours in the very beginning of the night. At this point DS was only getting up 1-2 nights a week.

  • I usually get success when I swaddle and use white noise. GL. No sleep is rough.
  • DS is 11 weeks and we still have this problem. He goes down for a 4 hour stretch in the beginning, then he wakes pretty much every 2 hours to eat. I have tried the RNP and co-sleeper. He naps well in the RNP during the day, but at night if I try to put him down he cries. So he sleeps on me or next to me...I SWORE I would not be one of those moms who puts the baby in bed...oh, well : (

  • Do you swaddle? He is almost 4 weeks and will sleep for four hours only if we have given a nice, tight swaddle.
