Is Christmas without toys......

really Christmas???

?Tiernan was seriously spoiled for his birthday, to the point where I am now completely stumped as to what to get him for Christmas, as :

a) ?He has gotten everything that I had put on a list.

b) ?There is no more room in his toy room or bedroom to store stuff.

?I mean he has all the big ticket items, train table, art easel, toy kitchen, trike etc.

Then for his birthday he got doctors set(s), puzzles, books, art supplies, more puzzles, more books, thomas stuff.

It's not a bad thing as things are going to be really tight around her at Christmas, but I have to get him something, and I'm at a loss now!?

Re: Is Christmas without toys......

  • We're going to get Nick one of those rough and tuff cameras since he loves taking pictures so much right now.  I think you can get him plenty of stuff that doesn't have to be toys.  What about coloring books?
  • Loading the player...
  • Maybe start a tradition of giving him a special Christmas ornament and new pj's for Christmas instead of more toys if he's going to get maxed out on his b-day?

Or have a Christmas toy that could be put away with Christmas decorations? Um... unless he loves it too much and doesn't want to part with it! That could cause problems once it's time to pack up Christmas...

Next year you'll have to save some stuff for Christmas gifts! Wink

  • Books, Christmas-y stuff... an ornament, a Christmas themed toy, like a Santa train or something that only comes out AT Christmas...
  • Xmas without gifts is still Xmas as long as you have eachother.

Think clothes, jammies - even summer items.  He might not be able to use the stuff immediately, but it will be used eventually.

  • Friends of mine have skipped out on gifts for their kids all together... knowing that the rest of their family plans to get them so much.

  • We are doing the opposite. ?We only got Sara a small gift (Megablocks) for her B-day and will get her a big gift for Christmas (a play kitchen.) ?I think it is just fine to get him just one small thing for Christmas. ?

  • We did this last year and plan on doing it again---we're regifting their birthday gifts at Christmas. They got so much that I didn't have the time or energy to put it all together or in their play room. So, they get most of the stuff "again"--but they would never know the difference.?

I also agree on the Christmas traditions of an ornament or jammies. We started the ornament thing and also Christmas frames each year. I also think clothes for the spring/summer would be good also. Wink?

  • I honestly don't mean this as snidely as it sounds, but lots of kids manage happy Christmases with no toys at all.  I wouldn't worry about it, Ryan was quite overwhelmed by the holiday last year (when he was two) and didn't want to open more than one present.
  • Oh, and we're planning on getting Max 3 gifts. (An ornament, PJs and something else) If 3 gifts was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for Max! LOL
  • Oh Eddie and I are also wrapping everything for Nick that gets bought between now and then.  He's all about opening presents so we figure he can open everything he wants.

    Not snide at all. ?

I already have his christmas PJ's, I started that tradition last year, PJ's, New Family Movie and ?cookies on Christmas Eve.

I think I may donate a toy on his behalf to toys for tots and then just get him a baby doll (to get him used to the idea) and leave it at that.

    ?

  • Yes it is still Christmas.

My kids (well, Joshua) are really spoiled when it comes to birthdays and Christmas.  They have three sets of grandparents and I have a huge extended family that spoil them rotten.

We started with Joshua is giving to another family or child.  This is our Christmas tradition/thing.  Every year, we go to the mall where they have the giving tree and we take one (sometimes two or three depending on our budget) wish tag.  Then Joshua gets to pick out the present, we wrap it together and bring it back to the charity.

It is really fulfilling for all of us and I think has been teaching my son a great lesson of life.

  • my coworker does the same as Erica, wrapping up the toys from b-day to use for Christmas. It sounds like a great idea to me!

I think the Toys for Tots idea would be great to start for him. We did that last year (the boys don't get it, but we hope they will someday) and I can just see Tiernan getting excited about making a big deal for someone else to be getting a gift. Wink?

  • I dont think you need toys for it to be christmas. It is a great opportunity to teach him about the holiday spirit or giving to others.
