How bad is Axel?

Ok...so my DH and I don't even have a short list and have only 5 weeks to go.  He brought up the name Axel tonight and loves it and I secretly am starting to like it too.  DS is Ethan and I think it goes well with that; however is it a horrible name?  I know that the whole Axel Rose association, however I figure kids his age won't have a clue who that is by the time they are old enough to make that association.  Thoughts??

Re: How bad is Axel?

  • Personally, I strongly dislike it and I don't think it goes with Ethan AT ALL.

Yeah, because Appetite for Destruction only came out 25 years ago, GnR haven't had a real album in almost 20 years.  Axl is totally a flash in the pan and that connotation will be gone ANY second now...

Also, I think of Axel Foley when I hear that name.

  • Sounds too much like a dog's name.
  • How bad is (the) Axel sounds like a question for your mechanic. I don't like the name.
  • It's pretty bad.

  • I like it!  I know two people named Axel (one 35 and one 7) and they're both really cool people.  I think it's a cool name.

  • DS has an Axel in his class at daycare, it just seems so harsh to me and doesn't (in my opinion) go with Ethan.

  • I think it's pretty terrible.
  • This one gets flamed every time it comes up on the board, but I like it. It's actually really popular in a handful of European countries.

Ethan sounds like a judge, neurologist, or master chef. Axel sounds like a criminal. JMO. I know it's popular in Europe, but you aren't in Europe. In America, my concern is how his resume will be judged.
  • I don't think it's so bad. It's a pretty traditional Scandinavian name, and you could do a lot worse. But clearly it's not for everyone.
  • I don't mind it, but it's a really hard one to pull off imho. More importantly, I don't think it goes with Ethan at all. Ethan seems so sweet and tame in comparison, and for some reason they sound a little tongue-twisty together (but that might just be me).

    unless you're scandinavian, i don't think it's a good idea.

i also don't think it goes with ethan at all.

i suggest oliver, noah, alexander, henry, or jonah.

  • No, no, sorry. Just doesn't seem like a good name to grow up with and doesn't go with Ethan at all.

I actually like it.  I've taught two different Axels over the years, and they were both funny, creative boys.

This.  I don't mind the name, but I agree, it would make more sense if one of the parents was European.

I mentioned it to SIL for their soon-to-be-born son, but her husband is German and they live in Germany.  DH couldn't believe I suggested it and said, "There's no way my nephew is going to be named Axel/Aksel.  Axl Rose is a d-bag."

  • My DS plays with a little boy named Axel.  At first I thought it was a little out there.  But once I heard he was named after grandpa, and I got to know him a little better, the name grew on me.  If it has family connection (or you have some European connections) I think it's a decent name.

  • I'm not really a fan but have you considered Aksel instead?

My friend from HS named her son that it is Danish and means "my father is peace".  It's basically the same as Axel, but less GnR ish.

  • You could move the letters around and just go with Alex.  Goes well with Ethan.
  • I believe Axel is something you name your dog or is the nickname for the teenage delinquent. So, no.
