Just had my annual review. Everything went well, except they want to cut back my hours. Not because of anything I did wrong, or because of the company's financial situation. Just because my boss knows that he doesn't get 40 hours of work out of me every week. And I can't deny that. I'm online alot, I take long lunches, run errands, show up late, leave early, etc. and am still able to get all my work done. It was inevitable, I was just hoping to stay under the radar for as long as possible.
It's going to be a joint decision between he and I, how many hours I'll work. But of course my pay will decrease however many less hours I work. So on one hand, it will be nice to have the lighter schedule. On the other hand, it will suck to lose that money. But at this point I can't say no, because there just isn't 40 hours of work for me to do every week, and he's pretty much passed on all he can to me.
So, I'm looking at between $250 - $350 less per month. I know it shouldn't be too hard to cut that from our budget. HOWEVER, we are going to have 2 kids in daycare starting in November. So I had already figured out how we were going to afford that (somehow, just barely). But now I have to find $300 more. Um, yeah.
I am very thankful to have such a nice boss and work for such a great company. So I'm not really complaining at all, I totally get where they're coming from. I'm just trying to wrap my brain around how we're going to afford this come November. I just paid my car off last month, which was a big factor in how we're able to afford daycare for baby. I need to cut about another $500 now. Ugh. I *thought* I was going to have about $400 extra a month between now and November and we could get some stuff paid off, but that's no longer true. ![]()

That's a really good idea if you could work it out! Seems fairly win-win.
OP, ugh...so sorry. I won't throw a bunch of money-saving advice at you, but just wanted to say how much that sucks. Keep us posted on how the schedule talk with your boss works out.
That sounds like a great idea! Would that work for you? Or even work MTW and a really long weekend with no daycare of thurs/fri?
Unfortunately, daycares in my area do not offer PT care. They just don't. I could look into an in-home center, but with DS being 3.5, I want him in a preschool setting, not in someone's home. And not only would be using 2 different centers be a PITA, it really wouldn't save us that much money.
So, great ideas, but unfortunately not an option for us
ETA: this also gets further complicated with my ML, I only get 60% of my pay for 6 weeks, which will just be that much less now. was planning on saving for that, but it's not going to be as easy now.
But I am very THANKFUL to have a good job right now, I really am.
I don't have kids and won't be using a daycare, so I don't have advice for you there, but I just wanted to post and let you know that I'm sorry that this happened to you. I am 95% sure that I will be notified in the next few weeks that I am getting laid off (furlowed, since I'm a teacher), so I am dealing with the "How do we afford (insert item here)?" dilemma, as well.
