Babies: 3 - 6 Months

My Thurs UO

And I know it's unpopular amongst some.

I don't think it is the pediatricians' place to tell you that you need to let your LO cry it out. I think that is strictly a parental decision, not a medical one. I don't like that they use the "well, they are ___ size, or ___ age, so they don't need to eat in the night."

Someone whose blog I follow has a DC the same age as mine, and they are doing CIO now at the rec of their pedi.

I just can't get behind it just because the pedi says to do it.

K, I'm done.

It's a parenting choice. If I don't have a problem with feeding him a couple times a night, what difference is it to them?

I don't think you need to call the pedi for every.thing. Yes they are educated in most things baby but you don't need their permission for everything.

I just see it alot on here and I agree most of the time but some times I'm like really? You need a pedi for that?

  • Well, we did it earlier in the week and after only 2 nights DS made a complete 180 with his sleep.  So totally worth it.  However, I agree I would never do it just because the pedi recommended it.  It's something parents have to research and decide what's best for them and their family, just like I don't always follow his tips on potty-training, discipline, etc.  He's an amazing medical doctor.  I have no idea what kind of parent he is.  So will I follow his medical advice?  Definitely.  Parenting advice?  Not necessarily.

I definitely know it works, and it is time for some, and not time for others, for sure. Definitely agree with everything you said, they are not parenting coaches, they are doctors.

How did it go btw Mavs? Obv it worked! How was it? Once we hit 6 months we will be trying it, if need be. Waited til 11 months with DD1 and it was the worst year of my life for sleeping.

So much better than expected!  Night 1 he put himself to sleep in under 15mins (I did check-ins at 3, 5, and 7mins and he was asleep before the 3rd check in).  He woke up in the middle of the night, and I did my check-ins again but then decided he seemed hungry.  Fed him, and after 2 check-ins he again put himself to sleep and slept the rest of the night.  Yay!  Night 2 he was asleep in less than 10mins.  Woke up really frequently throughout the night, but always put himself back to sleep with minimal fussing/crying (never long enough for me to need to do a check-in).  Night 3 was when it all turned around.  He cried for a split second when I laid him down, but stopped by the time I left the room.  Immediately went to sleep without crying, slept until 1 and woke up to eat, then went back down until 7:15!  Woot!  Last night was even better...he fell asleep without crying, and slept like a rock until 4am but then woke up because his diaper leaked and he and his sheets were soaked.  Boo.  But overall, yeah, a total turn-around considering less than a week ago he was totally reliant on the paci all night, couldn't put himself to sleep, was waking constantly throughout the night needing me to rock him back to sleep, and wouldn't sleep in his own bed.

I'm so glad!! Sometimes it is just the anticipation of doing it that is worse than the doing it. Seems like he just needed a little nudge. I would love to work on the initial "going down" at night. We hold her for about an hour before laying her down Embarrassed She goes to sleep at a decent time, just won't stay down unless we hold her that long first. Then again, I havent' tried in quite some time....

Oh you know.  Some people see a person wearing a white coat and think they're looking at God.  Huh?  I'll give you that obviously someone who has studied a specific field has more info/experiance than me, but I think you have to use common sense in addition to their advice.  But who am I to speak.  I got royally flamed on here once b/c I mentioned researching vaccines on my own.  I was told that I should just shut up and take my Dr's advice without trying to be educated on the topic.  I guess if that bumpie's Dr. told her to go jump off a bridge she probably would.  Sheesh.

Vaccines are such a flamey subject. There's no harm in doing your own research. I think some people now have access to so much information, without considering all of it isn't fact, that they start thinking they know better than some Dr.s because they researched it! Not saying you did. I don't remember that situation at all.

  • I agree.  I had a friend on facebook who emailed me asking me if I did CIO because her pedi told her to do it with her 3 month old and she just couldn't take seeing her DD cry like that .  I was shocked that her pedi would tell her to just let the baby cry, especially such young one.  I don't like CIO on any baby, personally.  I don't really think it's appropriate until they are toddlers who understand that they need to go to sleep and they are just misbehaving to get attention or something.  I'm not saying all toddlers cry just to misbehave either.  I think toddlers can feel just as scared and need their parents just as much as babies.  But I bet there are times when older kids will cry just to avoid bedtime, and then I would probably let them CIO.

Yeah, it's been a while ago.  I believe in that covo that I made it clear to that bumpie that  I wasn't at all against giving vaccines, but just wanted to get some info on them...maybe space them out a bit. But OMG....how dare I not just take my pedi's advice b/c they have all the answers.  (and just to add...my LO is fully vaccinated)
