s/o of the s/o - can they install the carseat correctly in their vehicle?

My ILs have a carseat for K.  I didn't think anything of it, till I saw it.  OH MY.  It was not a rear facing car seat at all.  And they somehow had it wedged in there.  I about died.  Needless to say, K doesn't usually ride with them at all, and if he does, I provide the carseat.

So does your family members know how to install the car seat or do you just do it for them?

  • Absolutely NOT!  But I don't blame them - I had no clue until I did some research on it.  so, I don't expect them to install the seat.  We do it for them - I probably wouldn't trust what the did, anyway, and would probably re-do it. ;-)

  • I installed my parents new one in their car and they havent taken it out since.  I think my dad could probably do it right but Id definitely check it before leaving C.

Dh's parents refuse to leave it in the car.  MIL has been having to babysit twice a week the past month and DH had to BEG her to put the carseat in the car, just in case.  So, she did and he said it was a mess.  He had to re-do it.  Same thing the first time she came to pick C up a few months ago.  So, no, they never get it right.

    This is a good point.

I agree with this as well.  My ILs haven't had a little one in 5 years, so I think they have forgotten!  We have 4 carseats (1 for my vehicle, 1 for H's, 1 for my mom and then the UHOH seat).  We had to train everyone on the UhOh seat so that they knew how to install it, but I still dont trust them! :)

  • Ugh I hate the carseat issue, not only can the inlaws not do it but not even DH. I am the only one who knows how to do it properly and it ticks me off to no end.

  • My mom can. Not sure about my dad, because my mom always does it in their car.

ILs -- heck no. I always inspect and re-do it when it's in their car. The carseat clearly marks where to thread the seat belt for FFing vs. RFing, and it is constantly done wrong. Never mind the time they just set the carseat in the back seat of the car and buckled her into it...didn't even belt in the carseat.

They should build a carseat with a cage around it.  That way, you can just buckle them in and throw them in the backseat.  It will be fun b/c the kids will just see it as a carnival ride.  Stick out tongue

  • My mom has the Cosco Scenera and we went over with her how to install it.  If she picks up DS, I usually randomly check it because I want to feel comfortable with him being picked up.  It's always been right.

The ILs don't have one, so they use DHs - Evenflo.  It is super easy to install (even more than my Britax), but DH went over it with them.

No, I don't trust any of them to install a seat. My dad did it once and it was basically right, but not nearly tight enough. The carseat in dad's vehicle stay installed. If he has to take it out then I redo it (he's never take DS in his truck, only DD).

My mom and mil would never even try to install one.

My parents went to the local fire station and had them installed before they picked us up at the airport.  They showed them how to do it correctly.
  • My mom also had it installed at the fire station the first time. Since then my dad does it. 99% of the time I'm there to make sure it's in right/well. My only complaint is that they are insistent on putting a towel under the seat to protect the leather in my mom's car.

  • I highly doubt it but then again they haven't had to install one in over 30 years.  Unfortunately DH doesn't even know which pi$$es me off to no end.  I know our emergency pick up people for daycare don't know how to do it but I checked with the daycare and they are used to having the emergency pick up person having no clue so they assured me they could do it for them.

  • I have always installed my moms and I check then correct my inlaws. I know it makes them mad every time because as soon as I open the door to look at it there is usually a comment made about how fil installed it so 'you know it's tight', but it never is and typically it is lose with the seatbelt and not with the latch system.
