what food would you serve at this birthday party?

we are having tylers 4th bday party at my parents country club. it is going to be a swim party and our plan was to bbq burgers and sausages/hot dogs, but there is no bbq (guess they figure people who belong to a country club are too lazy to grill!)! so i will need to bring the food with me, but i dont want to bring cold burgers or hot dogs, so i need a new plan.

the party is from 3-5 - what types of food would you serve at that time frame that can be made in advance? the only item i know for sure that i will do is fruit salad skewers, other than that i have no clue!

So weird that there's no grill.

Pinwheel sandwiches or lunch meat trays?

  • good ideas! thank you!!

tell me about it - they just built the pool/spa, bocci ball courts, gym, and a ton of other stuff for the pool area. how do you leave out a grill? wonder if they do it so you are more inclined to have to buy the food from them and not bring it yourself? still seems strange.

  • Can you bring in your own Webber grill?

If not, I'd go with sandwiches from some type of sub shop or  pinwheel sandwiches.  Costco sells a tray of them.

  • Ditto, sandwich trays and a few salads (fruit, pasta, potato?). I LOVE sandwich trays.

  • Costco also serves croissant sandwiches...Also delish.
  • I like the sandwich idea too, but I would do a make-your-own sandwich bar (meat platter, cheese platter, rolls, etc.)

  • Sandwiches would be easy. Or if you have access to an electric plug, then you could easily boil hotdogs in a crockpot. They wouldn't have the grilled flavor, but it might still give a BBQ feel.

  • Do you have one of those Hawaiian BBQ places near you? We catered the last 3 parties from a local place (Mahalo) and it ended up being less expensive than burgers and dogs. We ended up getting fried rice, hawaiian bbq ribs, teriyaki chicken and we learned our lesson about not getting macaroni salad. It doesn't keep very well. Try a green salad instead. The place near us packages them up in those great foil covered trays. All you need are the serving spoons and you are good to go.
