Donating Breast milk

Anyone donating their breast milk? I'm not sure how to go about it. I've heard from several people to not go through a milk bank and to only donate mother-to-mother. I'm just not sure where to start and was wondering if anyone was donating. Thanks :)

Re: Donating Breast milk

  • Just looked into it last night.  There is no milk bank in GA or SC... ugh!  The closest one for us is Raleigh, NC so I emailed them last night for more info.

  • I'm thinking about it... I have so much extra.

  • I wish I had extra!  Pumping and I do not get along so well...its going to take me weeks to get enough to leave DD for one date!

  • How do you have extra milk? freeze it for use later when you want to ween, but still want her to have BM.

  • I have over 1,000oz of BM in the freezer outside! It's not a deep freezer though, and I was told milk can only be stored for 3 mo before it has to be used if not in a deep freezer. I have another 2wks before I hit the 3 mo mark of my earliest milk. I'd rather donate like, half of it. I need to get moving on milk donation.

  • That is great you have that extra milk. I would give my left leg for any extra.I am struggling to nurse him twice a day and replenish my stash each day.

  • I only have so much room in my freezer, don't have an extra and don't have room to add a chest freezer (although I'd love one). I would like to donate some as it gets closer to the "needs to be used by" date. That's how I have "extra," as it only lasts so long in an upright, over-the-fridge freezer and I plan to nurse and pump for a year.

  • I donated mine last year and went through a milk bank. I had to get some blood work done and once I "passed" that I just dropped off my milk. Because Aidan was a preemie, my milk did/will only go to preemie babies so it made me feel like I was able to help out another preemie even though mine didn't make it. Besides having my boys and nursing Lucas, I feel like donating my milk was one of the best things I ever did because of the helping other preemie thing and I plan on donating any extra that I have with Lucas if I ever get to that point.

  • I have three drawers in the freezer full of milk and I'm quickly running out of room. We don't have a deep freezer so the 6 month mark on some of the milk is almost half way here. I figure it would be best to donate it rather than throw it away. That would break my heart.

I pump just before I go to bed and at 4am. Noah wakes up around 7am and if he doesn't take both sides, I pump again. That's how I've worked up such a stockpile.

Our freezer is at 0 degrees and everything that I've read says it can be stored up to 6 months. I hope that's right!

Belay my last. :( Some f***tard friend of my DH's unplugged the freezer and ALL 856oz that was out there is wasted. It's probably been unplugged for a week.

I'm still crying. I don't even have tears anymore. And I filled out the form this morning to donate milk. Now I have enough to feed A for just a few days if needed.

    I would F***ing kill someone.

    Seriously.

I cry when my husband thaws 2.5 ounces that DD never eats.

OMG- this is awful!  I'm so sorry!!!  I'm on a business trip and I am dumping all of my milk every time I pump, and it is killing me.  I cannot even imagine how you feel :(  :(
