Do you have a land line?

I know a lot of people who don't have a land line, but I've heard it's good to have one for calling 911 (no going through a third party, etc), and other things like if your service goes out. Do you have a land line? DH and I go back and forth over whether or not to get one - a friend of mine got one, and barely uses it. The only calls she really gets are from telemarketers.

Re: Do you have a land line?

  • We got one 2 months ago because it only added $5 to our monthly bill and we got free Showtime and Move Channel for 1 year by adding it.  Plus, my concern is with the baby that I would have a problem getting a hold of DH.  He tends to not keep his cell near him if he's at home and he won't hear it ring.  I figure it's worth the $5 if it will increase my chances of being able to get a hold of him.

I've had to call 911 on my cell a couple of times over the years that we haven't had a land line, and I've never had any delay or problem.  We have been without a land line for about 6 years now.

DH goes back and forth about getting a land line in a few years as DD gets older, thinking "how will she be able to call her friends?"  Umm, she can use one of our cells if she's just calling to see if her little friend down the street can come out and play.  Or she can get on her bike and go over there, like we used to.  I see land lines as a waste of money, unless you have no cell signal in your house or something.  As much as I hate the idea of kids with cell phones, I know that having no land line will probably mean that DD will have a cell phone at a younger age, but I feel like that's becoming a fact of life, and by the time she's 12 or 13, who knows what the technology will be, anyway.

Our cable and internet is cheaper if we added the phone line, so we have one.

Nope we have cell phones dont need land lines.
  • We have had one for a long time.  We plan to keep it as well.  It's reassuring to know that there is a phone in case of an emergency that we can use or a babysitter could use.  Especially if said babysitter (like my mom) hardly remembers to carry her cell phone with her, let alone use it as the primary way to call 911 if necessary.
  • We actually had a land line for 2 years and just got rid of it. We found that we never used it and the only calls we ever received were telemarketing calls. Also, when we first got it, it was only a few dollars more; but those tricky phone people slowly increased the price and after 2 years it was an extra $15/mo or so. So we got rid of it.

  • DH and I always carry our cell phones with us and have really good service in the house so I've never really seen the need for a landline (for us anyways).  It would have been like $20 a month which isn't a lot but it's essentially money down the drain since we'd never use it.

  • I voted SS... because when we moved cable/internet was cheaper for us if we "bundled" it with a landline. We did get it... and the only person that ever called us on the landline was my Grandma or telemarketers Angry.

We found out that when you sign up for the phone service your phone number goes on a public list- and we got calls NON-STOP! We ended up cancelling our landline and just paying more for cable/internet because it was such a PITA!

  • We just got one a couple months ago, and basically only telemarketers call because everyone is so used to our cell phones.  BUT.....just incase a babysitter needs to use the phone, or their cell phone battery dies or what have you, I wanted one for "just in case" scenarios Smile

  • We haven't had a landline since college...when BellSouth required you to have in order to have DSL.

We don't foresee having a landline ever again.  A lot of security companies can tie a system in with your cell phone - generally the set up is a tad more expensive, but it's definitely an option.

  • We didn't have a land line for years, then our service got really bad.  Our calls were dropping a lot and it was no longer reliable, which made me nervous as I had a 2 y/o and was pregnant at the time.  Plus it was a pain to make sure the babysitter had a charged cell phone or we had to leave one of ours.  By getting the land line we cut back our cell plan a lot, and we just really make an effort to use it over the cell phone.  My cell phone is still primary contact for drs and friends.  However, all family call us on our land line.

  • We have a land line but I work for the Corporate Deathstar so it is free.  Not really sure if I would have one if I had to pay. Embarrassed

We have Vonage.  Not a traditional landline but it does have the 911 features, and it is convenient to have as a number to give out when I don't want people bothering me.  I don't like getting calls for stuff, like reminding me of my haircut on Wednesday, or calling to see when I want to have my house powerwashed, when I am at work, so it goes to the landline (which then sends me a text message Stick out tongue).

Also, DH has a cell number that is from the other side of the state, so this gives him a local number to give out to people.  He keeps the long distance number because it is local for his mom to call.

I also like it because if DH sleeps in too late in the summer (he's a teacher), I can call the landline to wake him up.  His cell doesn't wake him since it's usually on vibrate.

  • I like the safety of it, power goes out it still works and don't have to worry about the battery dying, direct to 911 and no third party transfers or extra charges like the digital phone companies usually charge.

DH wants to get rid of it because it is expensive.  I might look and see if there is a cheaper plan that what we have since we only have 1 choice for landline phone service in my town.
