Waking up from naps screaming?

Lucas wakes up from his naps screaming, like he literally sits up and just starts to have a melt down until I come and get him.

He goes to sleep on his own without a peep, so it isnt like he should be suprised/startled that nobody is there when he wakes up.

Ive tried to sneak toys into his crib when he is asleep so when he wakes up he will be distracted, but he just whips them all out and onto the floor.

I've also tried to let him just scream for a few mins to know that I'm not going to rush right in and get him (now that I know thats just what he does and isnt hurt in anyway.)

Any tips on what I can try to make this stop?

  • Could it be night terrors?  My nephew did this for about a year.

  • Could be separation anxiety.  Gabriel went through that a few weeks ago, now he's fine.  I fully expect him to go through it again though.

  • I agree on the separation anxiety. My son does this and I am pretty sure that is what it is.

Glad to hear he is not the only one!

  • Thanks :)  I know it is probably "normal" it just gives me anxiety when I hear him cry through the monitor.  I dont think it is night terrors it is more of a "hey I'm awake come get me right this second" cry..the same cry he cries when he doesnt get his way.  It might be separation anxiety but it is more of a demanding feel, if that makes any sense.

He gets really frustrated because he cannot talk so that might be part of it too.  I dont know.  I just remember my sister when she was younger waking up happy, and asking if she could get up now - she was probably a bit older than Lucas but shes all the experience I have in being around babies all the time.

  • Noah will go through this from time to time still, especially if he gets woken up before he's really ready to wake up.

One thing- do you try and get the room dark?  See if there's any shadows being cast on the wall that might be scaring him.  Maybe something caused by the sun trying to get in the room.  We ended up having to turn the nightlight off because that was causing problems at night
