Teaching French to your child?

We'd love to raise our children bilingually although neither of us speaks another language. We're interested in teaching French and I'm wondering if anyone knows of any good programs we could use at home. I'm familiar with the Little Pim line (although I am not familiar with its effectiveness). Any other products or recommendations? TIA!

  • What about Rosetta Stone?  It's not specifically geared for kids, but it's an amazing program and has been used in classrooms.

I haven't used the French version, but I've used the Swedish version and it's super easy to use and is interesting.

    Bonne Chance!

  • You can also check out the local Parks & Rec, they will do some language classes, or Learning Express. I hear the Rosetta Stone & Little Prim are both good. There is another one I have seen with a monster type character named "Yummy"? maybe? I do have my french books as well that have very intro stuff to very advanced/fluent. You might also check out the bookstore and see if you can find lesson plans and stuff for foreign language instruction.

Immersion is the best way to a language, which makes it hard if you don't already know the language yourself.  You can use Rosetta Stone for yourself, and then introduce that day's lesson when you speak to her.  The easiest way to get babies to pick up words also is to have a few different people say the word, using a sing-song voice and motion with the object.  That isn't as effective/necessary with older kids, just the repetition by another adult is usually enough.
  • We send DD to a Spanish Immersion daycare/preschool. Maybe you could look around for something like that. they speak Spanish to her all day long. She is already picking it up. We also do Spanish books (but i speak some Spanish) and Dora has a lot of Spanish words.
