UGH! Cloth diapers will be the death of me. Help?

I have been researching cloth and thought I had decided what I wanted to try.  I had settled on fitteds (kissaluvs) and covers (wasn't sure yet). I was searching for a great deal and in the mean time I found a mix of things on CL for a steal. I bought 2 nb covers, 3 prefolds, 2 OS covers, and a fuzzibunz AIO OS all for $15.  But now that I have seen the prefolds and the fuzzibunz I have been flip flopping so much that I haven't bought anything else.

I feel like I am back at the beginning and I'm behind the curve to say the least since LO is due in 8 days.  I have been pointed to diaperswappers.com (super overwhelming) and a few other places but they just add to my confusion and anxiety.  I guess I am looking for some personal advice, experience, preference, anything to help me sort this all out.

I have decided that whatever I do get I'll use rockin green, but you have to have diapers to wash before you need detergent.  Also, rec's for a wet bag would be appreciated.

THANKS!!!

p.s. I have been to the cloth diaper board and that just gives me a headache to make sense of all the short hand on their posts.

The Fuzzibunz won't fit at first, so you'll need an option for the first few months if you'll be cloth diapering a newborn.  It's also a pocket diaper, not an AIO.  Kissaluvs (size 0) or newborn prefolds (I'd recommend Green Mountain Diapers's) will work (or you could check out GMD Workhorse fitteds, which are very affordable), but you'll also need newborn covers (I'd recommend Bummis Super Brites or Thirsties Duo Wraps Size 1).

I have a bag of Rockin' Green that was given to me as a gift, but I'd use Tide original powder otherwise.  RnG is expensive, and most of the moms on the CD board seem to use Tide with great results.

You could always order a diaper trial, like the newborn trial through Jillian's Drawers, and see what you like and dislike.

I have a few AIO's, but mainly pockets.  I wanted to make it as easy for my parents (who will be the caretakers when I go back to work until he goes into daycare) as possible.  These go on basically like disposables do.

I really like the newborn Grovia AIO's, the Lil Joey's AIO's, BumGenius extra small AIO's, and the Fuzzibunz pockets extra smalls.

I plan on using one size pockets after the baby grows out of the NB diapers.  This way all my parents have to do is put the diaper on, take it off, and dump any poop.

I considered cloth diapering for a few months, but to be honest, I was completely overwhelmed and no matter how much I read up on the subject I found that I just didn't really understand it! There just seemed like so many options and opinions and I couldn't figure out what was what.

In the end, I am going to just go with disposable. Maybe I'll change my mind in a few months.

I was that way too.  But once I bit the bullet and bought a few, it started making more sense.  I am just somewhat confused about actually putting them on the baby like how tight or what not, but I figure once he is here I can figure that out.

  • Is there a store that sells cloth diapers near you?  There is one here and it was super helpful for me to go and see and touch what I was reading about.

That said, in my super-overwhelmed state, I decided to start with prefolds and covers b/c there is the smallest investment.  I'm not really interested in AIOs and pockets seemed to be a lot of work- but I have a couple and I'm going to try them out and see what I think of them and go from there.

I would recommend a trial if you're really unsure.  I was going to do that until I realized that I was really liking the idea and simplicity of prefolds.

  • i really recommend checking out greenmountaindiapers.com and reading the FAQ on the cloth diapering board...both really helped me!  I also like hyenacart.com/spotscorner.  Moms sell diapers on there and it's much less confusing than diaper swappers.

I think for the newborn stage prefolds/covers and AIOs are your best bet.  I have quite a few Kissaluvs too...let me know if you have any other questions.  I'm not an expert, but i've done quite a bit of research and seem to get it Stick out tongue

  • Totally feel ya.  Really, you won't know for sure what will work and what you will like until you have a baby, so don't stress about not having a stash.  I know people who spent a small fortune on what they were sure was perfect for them only to sell them at way below cost because they ended up hating them.  I thought AIOs would be awesome until I got some, and turns out we're prefold people.

The FAQ at www.verybaby.com is very good for helping make up your mind.  It's clear cut and honest information without being overwhelming.  Plus, Jessica just rocks.

For a wetbag we used a waterproof compression sack from the camping section of Walmart.  It's made of ripstop nylon and had a little snap so it could hang on the outside of the stroller, diaper bag, etc.  I think it was 3 for $9 and held at least 3 prefolds.  You will need 2 so you have one on laundry days.  I made my own pail liner for our garbage can, but those are easy to find at cloth diaper shops online and in brick and mortar.

  • The whole thing confuses me too.  I ended up buying some FuzziBunz OS and some FuzziBunz Perfect Size (size Small).  I don't have a store near me that sells cloth diapers and the whole thing just confused the heck out of me.   I decided to start with trying FuzziBunz because of these two links: How to deal with a poopy FuzziBunz diaper  - This link also helped convince my DH that we could be "cloth diaper people" Cloth diapers for the modern mom - a GREAT blog write up, tons of pictures and another video at the bottom.  She covers how the diaper should fit, how to adjust it, etc.    Both of those links are done by the same girl.  I figure once I get comfortable with the FuzziBunz diapers, I can branch out and try other stuff.  I also need to keep it as simple as possible for DH and the ILs.  Prefolds are MUCH cheaper, but they seem just a little more complicated than the pocket diapers.    I also wanted to keep it as simple as possible for me - I can see myself becoming VERY overwhelmed in the first few weeks.... this is my first baby and I'll be trying to figure out how to adjust to being a Mommy, trying to figure out breastfeeding and trying to make sure I don't lose sight of my relationship with DH.  I don't need diapers complicating matters, on top of all that.
