What's wrong with my BF'ing!?!

We saw the pedi today for his one week check-up. We've been BF'ing and supplementing since the hospital (wasn't BF'ing well, high domed palate made it hard, jaundice, not eating, not pooping, etc. etc...). I've been BF'ing for 30-40 minutes on average then giving him formula, which he'll normally eat 2 oz of. The pedi said BF'ing alone should be more than enough and that they'll drink a bottle if you give them one pretty much whether they're hungry or not. So today I BF'ed for an HOUR, and he was still making his hungry/sucky face after (boob face as DH calls it). I know they just like to suck so I gave him his paci and he wanted nothing to do with it. He loves his paci so if he just wanted to suck I know he would suck it. I manually expressed my breasts and there was still milk there. I can't nurse for two hours at a time around the clock! Anyone have any insight? He was 9 lb 2 oz at birth, dropped to 8 lb 4 oz by day 2 in the hospital and is up to 8lb9oz with the breast feeding/bottle feeding.

He's probably just used to getting the formula as well and now its volume decrease for him.

  • I'm having a similar problem with BF'ing for 30-40  minutes...could be an hour if I let them and Violet still going to her fingers to suck on them. I usually back-up with formula then (this happens more for one of the evening feedings since they are in a huge cluster) to tide her over longer...because dang, I feel like enough of a cow...right?

My pedi said I could mix my breastmilk with formula so I do 2 oz of formula with 2 oz of breastmilk and that seems to work for us....

Sorry I have no big advice but just wanted to let you know you're not alone :(

Sometimes newborns literally want to nurse constantly - that's how your supply gets established.  Was he actively sucking the whole time or just comfort sucking?

I agree that seeing a board certified LC who can help you with a weighed feeding and evaluate his latch is the way to go.  It will take a while to transition off the supplements.  Kellymom.com has good info on how to do it.

I would suggest seeing if you could do a weighed feeding so you know how much your LO is actually getting when he BFs. DS would eat for 45mins but he'd only get an ounce because my supply was so drastically low. Also, I don't buy into the fact that they'll eat a bottle just because you give it to them. Now I can tell when my DS is full because he refuses the bottle when before he was just still hungry.

Yeah if that was the case they'd finish the bottle everytime if you kept offering it. When DD is full she refuses to drink the rest of the bottle. Sometimes she'll eat the full 3 ounces, sometimes she'll eat 2 ounces. At night when she's not eating every couple of hours she'll eat 4 ounces.

  • My LO is very fond of suckling. Doesn't mean he is always getting fluid. He'd give the feeding face all day long and suckle on everyone who holds him, but when I go to feed him he'll just sit on the breast (I'm talking about in between "real" feedings). I'm starting to learn when he is actually hungry and when he is just playing with his mouth/needing reassurance.
