I've had it since puberty. Pretty much comes and goes when it pleases. Haven't really found a connection yet, but my guess is it's hormonal. Today I had an "attack" leaving school. I drove like a maniac to get home and the cramps became really severe. It's probably one of the worst attacks I've had. The cramps really scared me and it may sound stupid, but can this harm my pregnancy at all? I'm going to talk to the dr about it on Friday. Anyone else with IBS?

Re: Anyone suffer from IBS?
I was never officially diagnosed, but in college I delt with IBS due to an increase consumption of dairy. I've been okay during this pregnancy, but I know how awful it is.
Good luck!

Yes! And it's been kind of terrible. I usually take Align and Fibercon, the former of which apparently hasn't been tested on pregnant women, so I stopped taking it. And the Fibercon alone doesn't help the pain and cramps. And throw into the mix the pregnancy-induced constipation (my IBS is not of the constipation variety) and I get all kinds of crazy stomach pains and I can't tell in the moment whether it's IBS-related or baby-related and it freaks me out.
I don't *think* it's causing any harm to the baby...but I have wondered. I was going to bring it up at my first appointment.
Hope it was a one time thing for you!
IBS itself will not cause any harm to your baby. Just make sure that if you are of the IBS-D type, you stay hydrated.
I have had severe IBS since I was 13 years old. It was pretty much in remission while I was pregnant with my DD but got terrible after I had her and has been bad since then. I am off my buscopan since it's not safe for pregnancy, and am suffering right now. Doctors will tell you to eat more fibre and will list every type of insoluble fibre out there - that is about the worst thing you can do if you have IBS, especially IBS-D. Try to stick with foods that contain soluble fibre, drink lots of room temperature water, and stay away from your trigger foods even though you may be craving them like crazy. I am off gluten, dairy, egg, and a host of other fruits and veggies, and it has made my IBS way more manageable. I decreased my attacks by about 75% and got my life back. Pregnancy this time around seems to have made it worse, and I feel ya on the cramping....I'm never sure if it's my IBS until I get the "OMG I need the bathroom now" feeling....and it seems to be happening pretty frequently. I hope it settles down soon.

My IBS has been way worse since I got pregnant and I've been dealing with it since middle school. I've been able to control mine for the most part by sticking to a non-irritating diet. Lately all bets seem to be off as far as what I can and can't eat and when it will decide to act up and how bad the episodes are. When I asked my MW she said that she feels bad but she'd almost rather I have that problem than the typical constipation. She said if it continues to be bad we'll discuss it again at my next appt.
I'm just trying to stick as best as I can to things I know I can eat and making sure I stay hydrated. I have noticed I sometimes have light spotting after an episode so that's the only thing I'm worried about. I'm going to make sure and discuss it at my next appt. GL!
