How do you think your SO/H will do during delivery?

Mine is going to either throw up or pass out of maybe even both. I know it... I feel horrible saying it but I have no faith that he will be able to handle things during full on labor. I don't think he will be able to even hold one of my legs. The earlier parts he will be fine with I think. But last night the girl on 16 & Pregnant threw up during labor and he turned completely white.... over a little puke. In a cup. We didn't even see the puke. Confused

I dont want my mom or MIL in the deilvery room with me so I am just going to pray for a couple really awsome nurses. lol

Lol, I have a feeling DH is going to have a hard time from passing out. We shall see!

  • I thought for sure DH would pass out when I had my son.  He has such a weak stomach...gags over everything.  I told him so many times he was not allowed to look when I was delivering because I wanted to make sure he didn't faint.  But, he did awesome!  And, he looked (on his own) and was actually the one to tell me I was crowning.
  • Haha I kinda can't wait to find out! After childbirth class this weekend, he went from wanting to only stand at my head and not see anything to wanting to hold a leg and totally see LO as he's making his grand entrance! I don't know how he'll actually do though... Confused

  • DH will be perfectly calm and make fun of me for being a big baby and complaining.  He'll tell me I'm overreacting!  : )

  • I think adreneline keeps a lot of weak-stomach'd dads from actually keeling over.  I think my H will do just fine.  He normally gets woozy at the site of blood, but he's become SO interested in YouTubing "natural births" lately and is just so into the process and doesn't turn away or seem uncomfortable at all by watching actual babies being born vaginally...today at my 24 week appt, he asked my doctor about colustrum and leaking.  He's all about it.  I think it might be sort of like people explain that birth is not a "medical" procedure, but a natural one...so many people that get skeeved out by cuts and surgeries and "medical" things don't get that affected by birth...especially of their own child.  At least, I hope that's the case for us ;)

He will be a lot more nervous/anxious than I will be. I'm having a repeat c/s and with my last, he couldn't stop pacing around the room right before. ;) I was as calm as could be.
  • I think my SO will be perfect. He's a very calm and collected guy and doesn't go into a panic or stress very easily. I think the worst of it for him will be having to deal with seeing me in pain, and not being able to "fix" the problem. He gets this super serious look on his face when he can't fix something, it's friggin adorable, that will be my focus. His cute "serious" face. Lol

  • My DH talks a lot of crap saying that he won't look "down there" and how he's freaked out but I know him better than that and think that he will do great. I am betting that he will WANT to look and maybe even cut the cord! I won't be offended if he doesn't but he's super grossed out by it haha...I think during the labor/waiting part he will be bored and anxious

  • Ladies - you have actually given me a little hope for my H after all! LOL! Maybe with all the excitement he is will do ok. Maybe as long as nothing too complicated comes up and it's not TOO lengthy of a process. Like if he doesn't have a ton of time to think about what's happening and just get caught up in the moment he will handle it ok.

No matter what I am still telling the nurses that he is a serious fainting risk. hahaha

  • He wants to be in the waiting room this time.  The birth was too much for him last time and that's fine.

My husband watches a ton of medical shows (like on Discovery channel) and surgical procedures, and really doesn't mind it. He thinks it's interesting.

With my son, my husband watched down there as I tried to push Q out (he was holding my leg for me), and when I had to get a c-section, he watched the whole thing.

  • You never know what to expect!  I had no clue how DH would be, he was going to stay by my head and go with the flow - that was the plan.  I pushed for more than 3 hours, I needed a sip of something (water or ginger ale) after every pushing session, and a new piece of minty gum - the epidural gave me an awful taste in my mouth.  He was right there doing whatever I needed.  He held my leg, watched DS be born, cut the cord and loved every second of it. I never would have thought at all.
  • Oh Sarah, I'm in the same boat! lol. MH is sooooo squeamish about anything medical - he won't get shots, go to the dentist or even watch hospital shows on TV. I am legitimately afraid he's going to pass out. He also said he won't be watching the movies in childbirth class and I honestly think he won't. My mom has said in all seriousness, "You'd better have a backup!" I'm prepared to go it alone! haha

  • My DH is pretty squeamish and was really worried that he'd have to leave or he'd pass out. He ended up being a rockstar. I'm not a person that needs someone in my face encouraging me and he totally got that, and was supportive in a way I definitely needed.

He did leave the room when they put in my IV and epidural, though. After DD2 was born, she had meconium in her fluid and a huge rush of people came in. He got really light headed and had to go out, but I think he was just overwhelmed

  • OMG I just laughed so hard reading this.

DH has already told me he is not sure how is even going to get me to the hospital because he is pretty sure eh is going to go into a full blown anxiety attack the minute he hears the words, "it's time."

I am hoping by some kind of miracle, he is calm and collected.  Hopefully, childbirth classes with help with that and I will get a better feel for how he will really be.

  • Mine was way too into everything with DD. He was fascinated by it all. I didn't really let him watch what was going down there the first time around, but he did watch my OB stitch my tear. He wants to watch the whole thing this time.

  • I think my DH is going to do fine. It takes a lot to get him anxious or scared over anything. He doesn't really want to see anything though, he wants to stay more towards my head but he does know he may have to hold a leg and may end up seeing something haha. The only thing I worry about is that he is super sensitive to smells.. they make him gag.. I"m usually the one that has to pick up our dogs accidents because he spends the whole time gagging and like I can't wear perfume or scented lotions around him. So I'm worried if anything is overly smelly that he may be gagging the whole time haha
  • After our scare over the weekend, I'm pretty sure he's going to be amazing when the time comes. He's always so calm and collected while I freak out. He always manages to say what I need to hear and do things he anticipates I'll need without me asking. I'm so excited for delivery day, and most people probably think I'm nutso. I just know he's going to be a rockstar.

  • I think he will be nervous but hide it well. He has a strong stomach and a good poker face! I'm honestly not too worried about him, he is a pretty determined person and a great supporter when it really matters.

MH always gets mad because I say the only people I want in the delivery room are the doctor and the nurses.  They were amazing both times! My husband hung in there - the first time was really rough and he almost passed out (from me screaming and accidentally looking where he wasn't supposed to!) but the second time he was much stronger.  This time I think he'll be an old pro :)

  • My husband has done really well both times so I'm not concerned.

If your husband gets white watching someone on tv throw up I wonder how he'll be when the baby throws up, or worse, has a massive blow-out diaper.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    This Cluttered Life

  • MH is an EMT and he hunts so I think he's ok with blood and such. But I think he thinks the whole process is a little nasty lol. I keep telling him I think its probably different when it's your own child but I don't think he is convinced yet.

  • My husband is in his last year of Optometry school, so he's seen almost everything! The only thing I think he'll have a problem with is seeing me in so much pain... he doesn't like it when I'm hurt.

  • DH says that he is going to have a hard time when it comes to changing diapers and the "icky" things babies do (he will do them, just have a hard time with it). However, when it comes to the actual delivery, I think DH will be fine. He worked in a trauma ER as a clerk for 3 years, plus his mom is a nurse. So he has seen his fair share of gruesome. I think a baby birth will just be incredible to him.
