So I called Kaiser this morning at 10am to get some medicine because DD has thrush. The advice nurse told me that the meds would be ready to pick up in 4 hours, so 2pm today at the main pharmacy at Richmond Kaiser. A few hours later, I noticed DD being more fussy and seemed to be uncomfortable since she would take the bottle for 2-3 minutes and then get fussy and frustrated, which she is an awesome eater and doesn't mess around when it comes to her bottle. She's also a snuggler, but she's also a great napper. For some reason, she wouldn't let me put her down. She didn't have a fever, so I called Kaiser to see if I could give her anything to help with her sore mouth. Since she's 6 weeks old, the advice nurse said she'd have to leave a message for our Pedi to call me back with what we can/can't do for her. She also saw that antibiotics had been ordered and confirmed which pharmacy we were going to pick up her meds at.
DH had the car today, so we had to wait until 7pm when he got off work to go to the pharmacy to pick up her meds. The pharmacy closes at 8. He stood in line for a solid hour only to get to the counter and have the one clerk tell him that not only did they not have her prescription ready, but that the reason might be that they are out of Nystatin and the meds were coming from Livermore and we can't pick them up until tomorrow at noon. The clerk could look to see if they had any of her meds in stock, but it would take a little time and since they were closing, DH was sh!t outta luck (what the clerk said). I called DH to see when he would be home and he told me the news. I instantly jumped into "mama bear" mode and called Kaiser. Usually, I'm pretty laid back and understanding about things, but I wasn't having this.
The nurse I spoke to called the pharmacy that DH went to and found that in their system, DD is considered a "non member" because her application to be added to DH's insurance hasn't been fully processed yet. So, with non members, it takes 24 hours to get a prescription approved and filled. I told her I didn't care which hospital I went to, but that DD needed her meds and why didn't the other nurse I spoke to tell me there was a problem and we would have to wait more for her antibiotics. I guess their system doesn't furnish that information to the advise nurses. So she called the after hours pharmacy through the hospital and the pharmacist agreed to fill the prescription, but that it would take 3 hours since she's the only one there and we would have to pay the full amount of the prescription cost, which was $45...ok, not a problem. So DH called at 10pm and the meds were ready. We just gave her the first dose.
I'm so beyond upset with Kaiser right now, and I'm afraid I'm overreacting. I want to call a department head or something and let them know this was unacceptable. But, being a first time mom, I don't want to fly off the handle unnecessarily. If it were me calling for myself, I would've just waited...but because it's her, it's different. Again with the instincts...

I should clarify that the clerk didn't say those words exactly, but told DH that since they were closing, he was out of luck for tonight...those were her exact words. But according to her attitude when he asked about why they wouldn't give the meds to him, she was basically saying that without words, and more with her demeanor.
Next time it happens, just mix a solution of 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1 tsp raw apple cider vinegar in eight ounces of water. Stir it well and use a cotton swab to wipe the solution on the insides of her cheeks, gums and tongue after bottle. It works great.
You could also do the same with 30 drops of calendula tincture in 8oz water.
There's also gentian violet, which works extremely well, but will stain her mouth purple.

Sorry that happened. I hear these stories about Kaiser all the time. I think that you should call and file an incident report, primarily regarding the misinformation you were given to start out with.
I hope she feels better soon.
this is KP being KP. i'm not excusing their behavior but it's par for the course for them. this is why i INSISTED that dd be seen by a pediatric pulmonologist (at the advice of her pedi through John Muir - i'm covered on a separate carrier from dd- and the first 30 days she was covered under my plan) the LAST day she was covered on my plan b/c i did not want to deal w/ the hoops KP would put up since she'd be switching plans to KP.
complaints w/ KP are a dime a dozen, in my experience, scream all you want - nothing is going to happen to make sure that a similar incident doesn't happen again.
