Hi ladies! I met with a photography studio last week who's work I really like, but they won't sell the digital images (for any price under any circumstance! crazy). This is pretty much a deal breaker.
Anyone know if Emily Dowd will sell digital images? Or of any other photographer who will? I know pure amour has gotten good recs here but I'm not wild about the pictures on her site.
Re: Maternity / infant photographer and digital images?
Are you looking for a studio or would a photographer work?
We've used Amy and were happy but if she isnt your style we've also used Amanda Williams and I know that she gives you the digital images. Not sure about Emily Dowd. I know there are others, but I cant recall them.

Emily sells the digital copies
If you really like the photographer, I wouldn't necessarily dismiss them because they don't sell the digital rights. The first time we did newborn shots we didn't get the digital copies and it really wasn't a big deal and I have never regretted not having them. We did get hard copies of all the pictures from the session. His print prices were very reasonable, so it was easy enough to just order the pictures we wanted from him. We actually spent less in the long run than when I've bought the session cd and printed on my own. Then I scanned the pictures I liked so I could post them on Facebook. Figure if your house burns down, what good is having the cd going to do since that cd, along with your computer, will also burn. The photographer will probably keep a copy anyhow, so as long as he/she is around, you can always get new copies
I know a photographer in your area who is awesome - August Tea Photography (Rachel is her name). Have you seen her work? She's sweet and her pictures are wonderful. I would definitely recommend her!

okay here is my tip....take the hard copies to cvs, walgreens, sams, where ever you can use the kodak picture maker or something similar. scan the photos and make a disc. you can NOT ask the store ppl for help because technically you are not allowed to make copies w/o a release, but since this is for personal use you could do it and they won't stop you. (i have never done this but I worked at one of the aforementioned stores and ppl do it all the time) since you are buying prints i don't really see a problem. it's not any different then scanning them on your home computer (if you had a scanner) and then it doesn't really mater and you can use the photog that you like best.
DH and I are using his cousin, she did all our wedding and engagement photos and they turned out AMAZING! she gave us digital copies, but i don't know if that was just because we are family or not. i think that she will do this for others. since she is free lance she does not have a studio but I really prefer more natural photos anyways. i would also check with susan ashe, she did my sister's senior pics and they rock. susan is using her for marketing materials so we will be getting tons of cool things and a disc with all the photos from the year after graduation.

if you like her stuff, PM me I have coupons (with my sister's pic on the from)
Thanks ladies, I will check those photographers out.
I suppose I could scan the photos, this photographer that we really like doesn't give you hard copies of the proofs. Essentially you only get the picture if you buy it professionally mounted, and it's on like a canvas quality paper with a glossy finish. I suppose just for fb that would work fine, but I don't like the idea of not getting all the photos. For maternity photos, it's not like I want to put them in an album or hang on the wall, they are really just for my own memories.
And re: computer melting in a fire, we have a fireproof safe that I keep our passports, birth certificates, and a small backup hard drive in. If there was a major fire it could be damaged, but I like to pretend our memories are being kept safe :-)
I really do not feel that it is fair to scan pictures in. Most photogs do not make that much money off of portrait sessions. Until you look into how much equipment costs, gas costs and the time spent editing a picture it really isn't a big payoff.
If you put a picture on fb that you don't own the rights to without a watermark that is stealing and illegal and putting the photog at risk to getting their pictures stolen by someone else. Also scanning in a picture usually doesn't look that great and most professionals don't want their work displayed that way.
ETA: I backup all my pictures on my flickr account. It is only 25 a year so in case our house burns or someone stole our fireproof safe I have a backup. And bonus I set my family up so they have access to the pictures and can send them straight to snapfish and stop bugging me for copies!
p.s. thanks for coming to this board when you are in San Antonio not Detroit. Nor do you ever contribute to this board but I am glad I looked up your business and see your watermark for your business is in your siggy. You have been reported also. You are just hurting your friend b/c from now on whenever her business is said on here people will remember this. Even though she deleted the bump never forgets.
2 Things...
August Tea is $700 just for the digital files... that is outrageous. Like, seriously outrageous...
Emily's work looks amazing and for the session and all digital files it is i think $400 - Kind of a no brainer
Actually the digital files with Emily are less than $400. I think they are $250, but I could be wrong. She recently changed her pricing, so I am locked into something different.

Wow! Well, heaven forbid you get multiple opinions on something. I didn't realize I had to live in each city to comment on their board.
And yes, these are my pictures and yes, I will watermark them.
I'm sorry you can't see how worth it August Tea's pictures are.
It has little to do with the differing oppinions, and far more to do with the fact that you don't regularly contribute on this board. Why would we trust a rec from someone we have never heard from? It just seems like you are trying to get business, not that you really care or want to participate.
Yes, the pictures are cute...but not worth that much money when you can get something equally as good from a photographer that has more class in reguards to the ways they get their business.
Kindly go back where you came from.

I love Amy with Pure Amour. Also, Kate Lees from KBL Photography ( she did DD 6 months photos).
I may be late to this (but I can finally post on here now that I'm working from home before ML starts - yay!) but Dionne from The Shooting Gallery charges $350 for newborn (which includes a $200 product credit if you buy prints) or $450 for the shoot plus all digital images. She also has packages that include more than one shoot (so you can have newborn, 3 month, 6 month, 1 year, etc) as well.
She took our wedding photos and I love working with her.
