DD's pedi assured me she does not have chronic reflux, but sometimes after we feed her (bottle or breast) she seems a little uncomfortable and sticks her tongue out a lot and if we put her down on her back, she'll often spit up quite a bit. At night she's fussing a lot after DH gives her a bottle before bed and it's taking quite a while to calm her down. We have the Newborn Rock N Play, which elevates her a bit, and we've been putting her in that the last two nights instead of her crib because she seems to be more comfortable and goes right to sleep. But, before these last few nights she was sleeping great (4-6 hours before feeding) in her crib, no problem.
I've cut out caffeine, we're trying to burp her more and hold her upright for longer after feedings. Anything else I can do? Or does it sound like something else? I should add she's very healthy, is a good eater and is gaining weight, so I'm just trying to find some tips on how to make her more comfortable, especially at bedtime.
Re: Reflux, gas, or just fussy?
It could be a variety of things. First off, she's coming up on 6 weeks old so it could be the growth spurt that happens around that time that usually results in increased fussiness and possibly eating more thus creating more opportunity for gas issues.
My babies both had less gas when I cut out as much dairy as I could from my diet. They also both had less gas when I nursed rather than pumping and bottle feeding. DD never spit up very much but DS spit up a huge volume of milk at least once a day for the first 6 weeks. We just had to burp and burp and burp him some more, he was and is very gassy. Luckily it's leveled off and he is not spitting up and he's sleeping better/longer and a LOT less crying.
TTC #1 Cycle 14 - IUI#1=BFN, IUI#2=BFP | TTC #2 Cycle 8=BFP!!

you can also hold her upright for 30mins after each feeding, I know it's a lot but it seems to work for some babies.
try doing the bicycle with her legs to help her pass gas and sit on an exercise ball and bounce, while holding her ; also put her on her belly and rub her back upwards on the left side
if she's sleeping better upright, let her, at this age, just do whatever works!
Sorry, I don't have any advice, but I just have to say that I LOVE the name Laurel. It's just so pretty!
Every time I see it I say out loud with our last name, but it just doesn't sound quite right...too many Ls :-( But maybe I'll steal it for a middle name...if I have another baby...and if that baby happens to be a girl... ;-)
I think I posted the exact same thing at about the exact same time, and our pedi also assured me it wasn't reflux because DS had periods of the day and feedings when he had no issues, it wasn't a 24/7 thing but rather a late afternoon/evening thing. It turned out it was that he was overtired, he wasn't really napping during the day and so he'd get grouchier and grouchier as the day went on. The advice we got was to try and make sure he slept more (easier said than done, we're still working on that one!). We've definitely noticed when he gets more sleep during the day he's happier all the time, but it's still hard to get him to sleep sometimes. He has definitely gotten over that super-fussy hurdle though (but probably not until closer to 8 weeks), so my advice is to wait it out a bit and maybe you'll get past it too.
One other thing we did was elevate one side of his crib/pnp at night by putting phone books under two of the legs to help if it was reflux and at least give me some peace of mind if he did spit up in the middle of the night.
