s/o What video monitor do you have?

I go back and forth about wanting one or thinking we need one.

What one do you have?  Pros/Cons?

Re: s/o What video monitor do you have?

  • We got the Summer 1.8" Video Monitor. Overall, I've been very happy with it. It seems to have a bit more static than our Graco Ultra Clear sound monitor but it's not too bad.

The only thing that weirds me out is that other people can pick up on the images. I wish they put more security on them. But I just try to remain really cognizant of turning it off. The other bonus is that if you have Amazon mom, it will give you 5 more free months of 2 day shipping if you haven't yet reached your 1-year limit.

We have the Summer brand, too - at the time, it was the most popular and best-rated, but maybe that has changed.

Pros: (1) no problems with intereference (picking up radio like our regular audio one does or pictures from another family's monitor), (2) no problems with static and being unable to find a channel that worked, (3) handy when traveling (which we do a good amount) and we want to keep an eye on the kids in their unfamiliar environment

Cons: (1) the picture on ours burned out somewhat when it was just over a year old, which I thought was lame, but Summer didn't demand proof of purchase (luckily, because it was past the warranty) and sent another with no questions asked, (2) pricey (but aren't all of them?)

As I said in another post, we got a regular audio one for DD. We got the video in anticipation of DS and used it with DD after we moved into a new house and transitioned her to a regular bed - it was reassuring to watch how she was handling the changes.  Plus it provided hours of entertainment when she was supposed to be napping and instead was singing, rolling around, and playing with her stuffed animals.  There were plenty of times when DD was an infant that she'd be fussing in her crib and, since she was fussy in general, we didn't know if she really needed us or was just working through something and settling herself.  DS was easier in that regard, but we still loved not having to tip-toe to his door and listen - or err on the side of caution and walk in (which would only make them madder).  It's not a necessity, but it's very helpful and one of the few splurge-y baby items worth its cost, IMO.

  • We have the Summer Infant Slim & Secure Handheld Monitor. https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3763010&CAWELAID=423525590

Love. It. I'm actually using it right now while DD is in her crib napping/playing. She's a loud sleeper and grunts and whimpers a lot, so this has been a life saver at night because I don't have to get out of bed and check on her wondering if she threw up or something else is wrong. Most of the time she's fast asleep and is fine. The night vision is very clear and I can even tell if her eyes are open or closed. I don't hear any static and no interference problems. We have it installed on the wall overlooking her crib. As a new mom, who isn't sure about which noises mean what, it's been great for me. I put it on my registry and DH's parents bought it for us, but I probably would've splurged myself if we didn't get it as a gift.

We have the Summer Infant Handheld one too. Its already been mentioned but I will summarize:

    1. Its worth the money! But not a necessity.

    2. For noisy sleepers, you can see if they are awake or just making sounds in their sleep.

    3. As a first time mom, it calmed many of my fears-- should I go in or not? kind of questions.

  • we have the same one as VTKendra, didn't have one w/ DD, didn't miss it, got it for DS and the 1st night we had it (before DS was born, in DD's room), we kept pausing the DVR to watch DD. It was so fascinating! Now I don't know how we survived w/out one, we loved it so much we now have one in each room. But it's not necessary by any means. It's one of those things you don't miss until you have it.
  • We have the Summer Slim and Secure one too...it messes with our wireless a little, we've made a few changes to help that a bit (thanks to doggylovr's DH!). It wasn't on my registry, but we got a big gift card from DH's company after DS was born and I decided we should get one. I LOVE it. It has saved me from going in there many a time for little cries here and there and I personally couldn't have done Ferber without it - I needed to see that nothing was wrong (no legs stuck, etc.). I definitely miss it when we go on vacation and just have the audio monitor!

  • We have a Summer video monitor too, but I got it at Costco online and it came with two handheld monitors (instead of 1) for only $10 more.  Costco has a great return policy too so if we ever have problems I'm sure they'll take it back with no issues.
