cooking question

I want to cook some chicken to shred it.  What's the best method?  I was thinking crock pot.  Do I add water?  How much?  8 hours on low?  TIA!

Re: cooking question

  • I typically bake it in the oven for an hour (or till it's cooked).  Then I shred it immediately.  I don't usually have the time (or the patience) to cook it in the crock pot.

  • I do this once a week for meals!  I use the crockpot.  Put chicken breasts in either water or chicken broth and add some garlic and salt.  I usually do about 8hrs on low and then test one.  If it falls apart easily when you pierce it with a fork, it's done!
  • We use a recipe like this one.

Do you cover the chicken with water/broth?  Or just a little in the bottom?

  • I poach it in water with a bay leaf and then shred.

I usually put about a 1/2 inch of liquid in the bottom and check it occassionally to make sure there is still liquid.

  • Am I the only one who can't handle the consistency of boiled chicken?
  • I poach.  Throw chicken in the pot, add chicken stock to cover.  Bring to gentle boil, immediately turn down low to simmer for 10 minutes, then turn off heat and cover for another 10 minutes.

Voila.  Tender and juicy - not the same as boiling :)

Agree. I once boiled some chicken breasts to the point of disintegration for a chicken salad I was making for a brunch I was hosting. It was n-a-s-t-y. I learned my lesson!

Oh, I know. I'm specifically turned off by boiled chicken. It makes me gag; but I'm definitely strange about meat.

Nope, I think it tastes too chicken-y.

    YES! This, too!
