Advice needed on switching between breast and bottle

I am breastfeeding but have been supplementing with formula for about a week.  The first few days, DS took the bottles without a problem,, but in the last two days he either cries and won't take a bottle or he takes it for a few minutes but then starts crying and doesn't want it anymore.  In all cases, he continues to root and wants to nurse.

We started introducing a bottle using pumped BM when he was 3 or 4 weeks old and he's had them periodically.  It seemed like he was getting used to them but suddenly he's back to just wanting to nurse.  I'm supplementing because he wasn't gaining enough weight and was very fussy due to hunger, so I'm worried we're going to revert back to that if he's not taking the bottles.

Any advice on how you got your LO's to successfully switch between the breast and the bottle on a regular basis?

TIA!

  • My LO just switches- but I have heard that babies don't like all nipples- I would try different sizes and shapes, and maybe the holes in the nipples have something to do with it?

  • I would try some other bottles if possible. My LO does well with both the Playtex drop-ins and the Avent bottles, both of which have the wide-base nipples that help BF babies. What are you using?

I use Playtex dropins.  He doesn't seem to have a problem with the nipple when he actually takes the bottle.  It's just that sometimes he doesn't want the bottle at all, but I know he's still hungry.  When he does eventually take it, he'll suck down like 4 oz.  I just wish getting him to take it wasn't such a struggle. He just seems to have a hard time adjusting to switching between nursing and taking the bottle.

  • Sorry, I see what you're saying. My LO did that one night too - refused the bottle after 2 oz and then ate from my breast just fine. They can have a breast preference, but since you have growth concerns already something had to work! Kellymom.com has a whole page of resources for this problem. Maybe some of the alternative feeding methods would work to keep Lo's weight up while continuing to work on taking a bottle directly?
