Babies: 6 - 9 Months

For those whose LO isn't STTN

DS is 6 1/2 mos and is feeding about every 5-6 hr at night, which is better than the 3-4 hrs he used to do before he hit 6 mos. The dr said that at this point he should be able to go all night without feeding, and I know each baby if different, but I have tried lots of stuff to try to get him to stop his middle of the night feeding but nothing has worked so far. This got me thinking, DS has been using Similac Sensitive formula bc of gas/tummy issues when he was an infant, is that formula less dense than the Similac Advance regular formula, or any regular formula? I am thinking about switching to regular formula bc maybe it is more dense and will keep him fuller longer, since DS sits up on his own and can basically burp himself, and see if that help him STTN. So for those of you who are having trouble with your LO STTN, are you giving your LO sensitive formula for gas?

TIA. :)

Re: For those whose LO isn't STTN

  • DS doesn't STTN. He typically goes to sleep by 8pm and wakes up at 1:30 to eat. I nurse him, he goes back to sleep til around 5ish and I have to pay attention to what he's doing then. Sometimes he wants to eat, sometimes he just has to put himself back to sleep. I BF so I can't help you with the formula, but I really feel like if he's getting up and eating, then he needs to eat. No matter what the pedi says. JMO.

  • Luke normally goes to sleep around 8:30 and is back up around 11:30. Then up again at 2, then 5, then 7 or so for the day. We feed him Gerber Goodstart. His Dr. said if he is waking up to eat, he needs to eat. She said it was normal.

I BF so I can't give my opinion on the formula, but E wakes up at least 2 times a night unless she is going through a growth spurt and wakes up more often than that.  Her pedi said it's still normal for babies to wake up 3-4x a night so I'm just letting nature take its course.  I figure she'll do it when she's ready.

I'm not sure if this is helpful or not, but we've used Similac Sensitive since about 8 weeks old, and DD sleeps through the 99% of the time since about 8 weeks.  We stopped the night feedings around 3-4 months.  So I haven't had the same experience with that formula.  But if I were in your shoes, I would probably consider switching formula too... sometimes switching things up can make a difference, even if there isn't really a good explaination for why.  Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies, I also agree that if he is eating he is hungry and needs a bottle, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to try the Advance reg formula and see if that keeps him fuller longer. :)
  • G is right around the same age, eats solids 3 times a day, has 4-6 bottles a day, and still wakes up hungry at night. I can't listen to my baby cry because he's hungry and refuse to feed him because a pedi who doesn't really know my child thinks he should be sleeping through the night. My kid's hungry, I'm going to feed him.

  • If he is still hungry, feed him. It wouldn't be worth it to me to change his formula up just so he will sleep longer. Eli was fed in the middle of the night until a couple weeks ago. There's no reason to stop if you know he is hungry just because the doctor said so.
