Am I overthinking this-need opinions.

I am having a c/s on June 2. A neighbor is watching DD until 5:00pm and then my sister will be picking DD up and staying at my house from Thurs-Sun. My sister is coming in from out of town and basically had to beg her principal for the time off (she is a teacher and it is their testing week).

June 3 is her birthday so I wanted to leave her out a gift (also to double as a thank you for helping), like a gift card, and a little basket with some magazines, nail polish little treats etc. My other issue is what should I have on hand for her to eat for dinner?

I was thinking deli meats, a rotisserie chicken, and maybe one or two prepared items, and then some frozen TV dinners? I can't think of what to have in the fridge that would be easy for her. I plan on doing blueberry muffins, banana bread for breakfast. Any ideas?

  • I think that sounds like plenty!  I went out to help my SIL when my nephew was born because my brother had to travel and she was alone with a preemie and a 3 year old.  I totally expected nothing. I was there to help them, and I went to the store, cooked dinners, made breakfast and did what was needed.

I think it's awesome that you would leave a gift for her birthday and gift cards and a basket with goodies she likes is really nice.  I wouldn't worry too much about the fridge being full, just maybe a normal grocery trip right before?  Or maybe leave a note with a gift card to Lowe's (or HT, Food Lion, whatever is close) and tell her to go get her favorites from the store if she needs anything?  Or a gift card to a local restaurant or pizza place for her to call and order something one night?

*Also, how in the world are you having a baby in less than a month?!

  • My mom and one of my BIL has helped us out with things here before and stayed at our place when we're gone...I've always just asked ahead of time what things they'd like to eat and gone to the store the day before we leave and gotten things they like to make sure they're good on that front. Partly because we live so far from things and partly like you, I just think it's a nice gesture to say an extra thanks so much for helping us.  Maybe just shoot her an email and ask if there are certain things she'd like to eat while she's there so you can make sure you've got them for her ahead of time. Other than that, it sounds like a great plan!!
  • When my parents stayed with Ella - we just made sure to have a stocked fridge with foods Ella liked and things my parents liked.  I wanted to make sure I had the "easy quick" foods for Ella (chicken nuggets, fish sticks, sweet potato fries) so my mom didn't have to go to too much trouble with preparing dinner for her.

  • Thanks. I am not worried about what to feed Jocelyn since her menu includes like 3 things, so that is covered. It is more about having enough so my sister doesn't have to go looking for food. She is the type of person that will just eat pretzels or something and tell you not to bother getting her food, so I just want to get stuff and be done with it!
